Can anyone explain to me what the prefixes mean for replacement lamps for Tota lights such as EMD, EGD, EHZ, etc?
 
Those are lamp names, essentially. You can find replacements 3rd party as well (Eiko, for instance) but the watts/volts must be the same, as well as the style, which that prefix indicates.
 
It is what is known as an ANSI code (American National Standards Institute). It is simply a way of standardizing the size, connector type and wattage of the lamp. You can cross reference this code between many manufacturers.
