Low Volume Peeking over 0db

Are we talking 0 VU (analogue) or -0 dB (digital)? If you're exceeding -0 dB on a digital recorder, you can't really remove that digital distortion after-the-fact. As a rule with digital recorders you're better off under-recording than over-recording.

Run some line-up tone through your headphones or monitors to make sure you're not monitorring too quieltly. If you're meters are pinning, but it still sounds low then you may have a problem with your monitoring levels, or even your headphones.

If you find that the average level is pretty low, but the meters are pinned by momentary peaks (eg. percussion hits), you can use a dynamics compressor to beef it up while keeping those peaks under control.

Ah, so you DO have loud, unwanted sound (taps). The best place to begin is indeed a compressor. Start by setting the threshold somewhere around where the MUSIC peaks, the ratio around, say, 10:1, and the makeup gain to a little less than the difference between the music peak and 0db... then futz with it. Or try a limiter with similar settings if you have one...
