I'm looking for a very inexpensive portable mixer to use with a shotgun mic for ENG applications. I ran across the ART brand

Does anyone have any experience with this mixer or one similar. Rolls makes one just like it.

Other than the fact it doesn't have a good led level meter, I'm curious if the sound quality is good.

This thing doesn't look like it's designed to connect between microphone and camera -- it says it's to connect the mic to a mixer. I'm not an audio expert, though.

Also, it's phantom power is only 12 VDC. Don't most pro mics require more?

Is your primary concern being able to monitor and adjust audio level on the fly? I know it would be hard to operate the level controls on most cams while shooting.

That doesn't cover any of the reasons you use a mixer - providing 48v phantom power, raising the level to feed the camera with line level, providing limiters and low pass filtering, or providing good metering for level control. IT's really just a mic combiner to send multiple mics into a single input. With just one mic, you might as well just go direct to the camera. You're going to be hard-pressed to find anything down that low in price that will do a proper job. It may be out of your budget range but take a look at the Sound Devices MixPre to see an example of the sort of thing you need to be looking for.

what do you think of Sony portable mixers

Which ones? A quick google turned up their DMXP01 ENG mixer and it looks like it would do the trick, but at $3200 list I think it's a little above the budget our original poster had in mind when he asked about the <$100 ART <grin>.

Thanks for the replies. What was I thinking? Geeze im an idiot!

Anyway I found a much better $1200 system made by Shure I will rent (borrow or steal).

If you buy, get the SD302. rent until you can afford it. You could always get an MM1 or a mixpre in the interem if you only need 1 (MM1) or two (mixpre) mics. At least you will get decent preamps.
