Low carb diet...

Tom Marshall

Actor!!!!!!
Anyone else here follow a low carbohydrate diet? I'm just starting mine back up because it works so well for me. I know Blaine's been on a low carb diet for a while now and he swears by it, as do I.

I probably should at least cut my carbs down alot :) Are you following any specific plan or just trying to keep total carb count under a certain number for the day?

I follow what's known as a cyclic ketogenic diet (CKD). The goal is to eat low carb all week and then carb load on the weekends so that your muscles have a lot of glycogen stored in them for the upcoming week for a better workout. It's also known as the "Anabolic Diet". Works great for people wanting to get in shape and even bodybuilders, since you're able to put on muscle mass while reducing bodyfat at the same time.

Another advantage to the CKD is that, since your bloodstream no longer carries an excessive amount of insulin to deal with a high blood sugar level, your body naturally lets more HGH to be released from the endocrine system as well as epinephrine and norepinephrine, which help to transmit nutrients into the cell, which is one of the primary functions of insulin (in addition to breaking down glycogen into simple glucose).

But cutting carbs is a GREAT way to get in shape... cut out sodas and bread and you're a long way towards getting there... :)

I like the way that works. So is it assumed that your weekends are your "rest" days or does it matter? No more soda (ok maybe one a day, I cant just let all this go to waste :)), and no more bread. I can do that! Even though its the weekend I'm going to see start counting and see just what I'm even eating, or would normall eat at least. Thats a big part of the problem is that I have no clue how many carbs (or anything) else is going in. I have an odd feeling its lotsa carbs... My body has plenty of carbs stored from last week...

off to go google me some CKD - thanks for the info Tom!

Yeah, it means weekends are rest days, really... eat whatever you want for the most part. The Anabolic Diet recommends low fat and high carbs on the weekends, but I've found that it doesn't really make a difference. Eat whatever you want... order an extra large pizza with extra pepperoni and enjoy it. :) You can even have a couple of beers if you want to and it won't really affect you.

One thing you are allowed is diet sodas. They don't hurt the diet, really.

gearing up for bikini season...

In my case, I'm an actor and I need to stay in shape. :)

That's cool. Most of my bad eating that I'd miss is on the weekends. I wont miss eating crap during the week. All those sub par fast food burgers I eat out of convenience wont be missed that much. Pizza and eating out on the weekends is what would be hard to skip for me. I'm starting a diet dr pepper thing. Its not so bad I wont drink it, but its not good enough to keep drinking it all day long. Any thoughts on cheese? I can still eat cheese right? Its just plain old provolone or swiss, nothing weird or processed.

Cheese, for the most part is fine. American (processed) Cheese is probably the highest of all the cheeses. Gouda, Edam, Swiss, Provalone...all fine. Any type of meat (including fish, fowl & bacon) fine. Now shell fish and shrimp, you gotta watch those but in moderation they'll be fine. If you like fruit, go for the berries: rasp, black, blue. Leafy green veggies are okay as is broccoli and asparagus.

And forget that diet Coke/Pepsi/Pepper andwhatnot including Sweet--N-Low and all other Aspartam and sweetner stuff while on a low carb diet.

Your body can´t tell the difference. Here`s what will happen:

1. You drink a diet Pepsi
2. The taste is sweet so your body thinks there comes loads of sugar.
3. It relases tons of insuline.
4. But there is no sugar in your blod (wich is flooded with insuline now)
5. Your blood-sugar drops, you get dizzy and hungry and fat because nothing maks faster fat than unused insulin.

Wow! I've never heard that. Thanks for the info.

Your body can't tell the difference ?

The body responds to sugar chemically; not sure there is much Pavlov action going on ?

According to Mauro Di Pasquale, who wrote the Anabolic diet and is considered an expert in low carb dieting claims that diet sodas are fine, in moderation.

There's a possibility that your body will release some insulin in order to deal with the artificial sweeteners, but if you have one or 2 diet sodas a day, you've got nothing to worry about, really. It's when you drink, say, 4 or more diet sodas a day that you might notice a problem with your body maintaining a state of ketosis.

Hey Matty, let's go to Hooters again so I can get a burger without the bun and confuse the hell out of the waitress... that was fun...

Well I can tell you for a fact it doesn't work that way for me.
And I can back that up with actual urine testing.

I pee on those ketosis strips that tell you if you are in ketosis ... i.e. switched all your bodies functions from glucosis (sugar burning) to ketosis (fat burning). You pee on the strip and it tells you if something you're eating is knocking you out of ketosis, and diet sodas have never been a problem.

The only thing I've ever had problems with actually is low carb bars. They pile the fiber high to get the net carbs down, but still my weight loss is not as high and the ketosis strips show me in a lesser state of ketosis if I eat too many fake low carb products. If I stick to real meat and cheese I'm fine.

238 down to 209 without exercise in I think about 10 weeks (would have to check my journal) plus I took a week and a half off for my birthday.

Atkins recommends Splenda as a sweetener, though it doesn't come in most sodas and the ones it does come in seem to taste booty. But Splenda is supposed to be a better sweeter for low carb dieters.

Wow I'd never heard of ketosis strips. I may have to pick some of those up. So pretty much if I just eat meat and cheese (in moderate quantities) and moderate my intake of diet sodas. That doesnt sound bad at all. A big thanks to all for the experiences with what works and doesnt work with low carbs. I've learned a whole lot and am excited about all of this. Thanks!

Hey Jack, congratulations on the great results. :)

I'm curious as to the low carbs bars. Do they contain any Splenda? Which ones did you try?

Well, you should also take a good multi-vitamin so that you're not missing any key vitamins or nutrients. Some people also need to take a fiber supplement or just make sure that you're getting enough fiber in your diet by eating enough green leafy veggies.
