Low budget outdoor wide shots

Hey guys just wondering how you approach outdoor wide shots on low budgets with out HMIs/generators. Im well aware of using negative fill and bounce for close ups and medium close ups. I usually plan shoots around sun position and shoot in the shade as i prefer the flatter look for wides/steadicam for when I dont have a lot of light control, having said that when you watch a big budget movie the wide shots still have some light directionality from a large scrimmed HMI.

Im just curious how to improve my wide shots in overcast weather w/o a large HMI
