loud noises in headphones...

I was messing around with the DVX and plugged in my headphones into the camera for the first time (they are those small MP3 ear plug type headphones)

There is LOUD hissing, and everything I do, I can hear. When I touch anything on the camera, I can hear it really well.

The audio bar at the bottom of the LCD screen only reaches 2-4 bars and it's still loud. When it hits one red bar, it's really loud, but it's still bearable I guess.

Is this normal?

Without knowing what is "loud," it very well could be normal. Did you try turning down the headphone volume so that when you are hitting -12 the volume is at a comfortable level? An easy way to set this is send a -12 tone to camera with volume all the way down, put on headphones, and then turn up volume until the tone is pretty loud but not to the point of being damaging to your hearing.

If the headphones are cranked too loud then you will hear the preamps loud and clear.

Good luck

It could also be a problem with the headphones. Are they high quality in-ear or just the cheap ones that come with most MP3 players? Either way, you may run into problems. Get a decent pair of over the ear, closed back types (Audio Technica makes a decent pair for about $50, or better, get the Sony 7506's for ~$99).

>There is LOUD hissing,
this happens even to me. i guess it depends on the low quality headphones. i cant' believe the dvx has a low quality audio monitor output. The recorded signal is not what you hear with low quality headphones. By the way, the built in mic gathers a lot of noise.

>and everything I do, I can hear. When I touch anything on the camera, I can hear it really well.
:)
this is just the magic of audio recording. it's normal. when you get a decent shotgun mic (with shock mount!) not only the hiss will go to almost zero, but you will also be able to 'select' the sound sources

And anyway maybe the phones volume is actually a little high in your case. you can adjust it though

Lloyd,
Hey, The DVX is known for a bit of noise in the headphone system. It is not in the recorded sound thou. I know it's a drag when looking for hum & hiss on set. Using a mixer and a set of real phones (7506 seems to be a good choice) to see if it is the camera or the mic/cables.

I know, more gear. But to do the job right ....

See yea,
Steve
