Editing a piece right now - the audio levels are very loud - they are distorting slightly and peaking into the red - I know there isn't a simple fix for this, but is there anything else I can do besides just lowering the dB ? Any FCP filters?
If the audio has been recorded clipped and distorted, then there is very little you can do within the computer software (fcp) to fix it. What you need to do (within the computer) is to run a multiband parametric equalizer over the files - there might be one inside the Soundtrack Pro software that comes bundled with Final Cut Studio - but I don't use that programme (use Digital Performer) so I'm not sure. If you play around with the frequency settings you can usually find where it is clipping and just pull that down a bit. Then run it through a software compressor to stop any fluctuations.
If it was me though I would recapture the audio through the analogue outs of the camera/player and run it though a mixer and an outboard compressor, capturing back into the mac and FCP through the computer inputs. That way you have a bit more control and a nicer compression.
Both of these methods need some level of skill though so if your not sure how, try and find a mate who has a few skills in audio and get him to give you a hand.
digital distortion is much like blowing out the highlights in a pic. There's really not much you can do to repair it. YOu could carve out the freq but usually there is a good chunk that would need to be carved out, not necesarily just one, leaving a rather "hollow" sound. One thing you can do if your project it flexible enough is mask it with some other sounds...ambient noise, music etc, assuming it's dialogue of course. Get creative and you can take the focus off of it a bit. good luck
