Lost Preview Screen in Vegas 5.0???

 I have spent the last 5 days editing a new program and everything has been great... until this afternoon. I selected some new video from the media pool to add to the video track. It was a cross disolve with the last piece I added. I clicked on the play button and the background music started as the cursor moved forward, but my
preview screen was black. I clicked on "play from the start" and the cursor jumped to the beginning and the music started from the beginning, but the preview window remained black. (I did not have any problems seeing it before).

I re-docked the preview window (it had been on a second moniter). I checked the Options/Preferences "video" and it seemed fine.

I saved my work, closed Vegas and restarted to the original default settings. Still no preview.

I got out the original program CD and reinstalled Vegas 5 (as a repair installation selection) ... still no preview.

I just completed a vegas "preview render". The media player opened and is playing back the audio, with a black preview screen.

I must have accidently clicked on something to "turn off" the preview for the
project. There are 2 video tracks and neither one will appear in the preview window. The audio plays back fine....

What have I done??? How can I un-do it??? I even reviewed the Gary Kliner CD's for Vegas 5 (and they are excellent) but can't find any mention of the problem I am having.. which probably means it is some thing simple to correct.... and only I would screw it up!

Hopefully someone can straighten me out!
Thanks

Are you able to import another file? Any media to see if it works? Have you adjusted the composite level of the track(s) by any chance? Have you selected Mute on any of the tracks?

EDIT: ignore the below. That doesn't kill the preview. Hmmm....but the same thing happened to me a while back and I...oh, never mind. Just getting old, I guess.:embarasse

There's a little television icon at the top of the preview area. Is it "down"? That indicates that you want to view on an external monitor...which won't help much if you don't have one connected. ;)

If that's not the problem, maybe someone else has an idea.

Look at the button over the preview window which is a square with a solid circle in it. Click the little down arrow to the right. Make sure there isn't a black dot next to "Clipboard." If there is, choose "FX Bypassed." Also, make sure that button isn't depressed in the normal course of viewing.

What David said.... :smiley_up

Also, check that you inadvertently didn't press the 'mute' button on your video track.

EDIT:
Boy do I feel stupid. Just rereading the thread - that's just what John Hudson suggested. @ myself.

Thanks for the suggestions.... I inserted a new video track and imported new video and the preview works fine for it. So my problem must be in the header area of the original video track (track 1). I suspect that it may be in the composting or automation settings?
Bypass motion blur is in the up position
Track Motion opens to a blank window (square inset with Y at 12 and XX at 3)
Track FX opens a plug in chooser
Automation settings has Automation Off selected
Mute is in the UP position

DOING THINGS ONE AT A TIIME CERTAINLY HELPS.... It was the "solo" button. As I
typed this reply, I clicked on each item and when I clicked on SOLO the video Preview
appeared.... duh. I could have sworn I tried everything last night... but after 10
straight hours of editing, I guess I was a little "out of it"... and frustrated.

Anyway... THANK YOU for your suggestions.... I appreciate everyones willingness to
offer help..... Have a great day!!!
