Lost in Translation

Oh crap; I loved In America ! I missed that! Add it to my list for sure.

Man I see Finding Nemo on everyone's list. What is it ?

I watched it (part) with my kid and wife on DVD and it was blah to me (I am alone on this I know). Of course I don't do the cartoon thing.

Some surprises to me are Paycheck, The Hunted ? Wow!

Incidentally

I did a 2006 Year to Date box office gross check and was very surprised to see:

The Pink Panther $80,744,000
Big Momma's House 2 $68,548,414

In the Top 2 of 3 spots ? I can totally accept films like 8 Below and Shaggy Dog being in the top spots' these are childrens movies. The kids films always do good.

But how can Failure To Launch have any draw at all ? The first romatic bullshit film of the year maybe ?

I'm glad to see Dark Blue on John's list and Out of Time on Blaine's.

Great, underappreciated films.

Maybe I should throw together my top films of 2003.

Box Office, like any other statistic can be manipulated to prove the point of the person using those statistics. It is only one of many tools to determine the "worth" of a movie and can sometimes be totally baffling. It sometimes proves the old adage...there's no accounting for taste.

Let's see your list!
It might have been on my list...but I never saw it. I know, I know. It just somehow slipped through the cracks.

I always waned more of The Thing... I always wanted to see what happened next, probably more so than any of JC's movies, besides maybe Escape from NY because Snake was just so cool.

And yea, part 2 was awful. It had that post 80s done cheap look that JC has now. Its amazing that how we really did movies for no money they felt bigger. When he had a little more money they look like they were shot with that 1 megapixel Fisher Price toy camera.

Junkie's top of 2003 (in no particular order)

City Of God
Gangs of New York
Return of the King
Identity
Open Range
Oldboy
Matchstick Men
The Cooler
Kill Bill volume one
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Mystic River
Out of Time
Dark Blue
Terminator 3
Minority Report (2003?)
25th hour
Spartan

IMDB has Minority Report as 2002, though it were 2003 it would have been on my list as well.

A lot of Open Ranges. I may have to see that one after all.

I absolutely detest Kevin Costner as an actor, but Open Range was good in spite of him. Of course he had Robert Duvall to raise his level.

I added it to my Netflix que. I should get it right away since I'm banned from getting the new releases until they're 8 weeks old. Bastards.

I'm also not a huge Costner fan. I liked him in Untouchables and Field of Dreams, even No Way Out, but other than that I find him as exciting as dust particles. He's really nice though. He took his daughter to see RENT when I was working the show in Boston and we talked for 15 minutes or so. Really nice guy. Good director. Bad actor.

I'm glad to see a lot of love for Minority Report. I've run into a few people who hated it and I just loved it. I'm never sure how people feel about that one.

It's funny because I thought in Costner's earlier movies (not The Big Chill obviously) he had charisma and presence. It's somewhere around/after Bull Durham and Robin Hood that I just thought he got so dull.

I really like it, too. Philip K. Dick. At the risk of upsetting Hudson's day, I'll say I'm not much of Tom Cruise fan, though he is worlds better than Costner. Actually, Cruise is at least entertaining even if he seldom disappears into his roles.
