To each their own. I thought it was boring and sucked ass. It tried really hard to be a deep movie, but I found it false almost every step of the way. And just boring.

Different people respond to different stories/movies/performances. American Beauty did absolutely nothing for me but break a 5 night insomnia streak.

I thought LiT was a great travel video for Japan and not much else. It was boring. Sorry! After the initial set up, and the great scenes of Bill Murray shooting the commercial, it was just boring. I couldn't believe she won a screenplay Oscar when she even said in interviews much of the movie was improved.

I really liked Virgin Suicides, though flawed somewhat. She showed promise. She showed growth in LiT, but I just thought the story was very weak. At the end of the day I didn't care about the characters and just wanted the movie to end. :crybaby:

but back to Lost in Translation:
So you thought thought the movie was boring where other people thought it was beautiful. You were bored because it was so Simple -- maybe that isn't your preference.
But I don't think anyone has ever made a movie about an older guy falling in love with a younger girl and doing the Right Thing. These movies are usually all about doing the wrong thing, and screwing up their marriage, and oh what a terrible world and oh the heartbreak, blah blah.
But this movie stayed as real as it possibly could -- and maybe that can be boring to certain people, but I think that she made something incredibly poignant out of such a simple series of events, and nailed it with an amazing soundtrack from the guy from My Bloody Valentine.
:)

(and you're right about Virgin Suicides!)

Not at all. I don't mind simple. I wouldn't have liked the movie more if the guy didn't do the right thing at the end. I just found it boring. It was not very interesting TO ME. The characters were blah. I didn't care. I didn't like her. I didn't give two craps about him either. After the initial set up, FOR ME, it tanked. It didn't deliver on the set up for me.

Its not that it was too simple. It simply just wasn't interesting.

but why would I watch a film with a wrong end? I have seen several cases like this (I mean with wrong end) on films, and in the real life too. I don't want to see again a wrong thing end story. And this film gives... peace(?)

Sorry but I don't follow you.

If you mean why would you watch a movie where the guy is mean? I don't know. Don't watch it. No one forces you to. If its not your kind of peace, don't watch it. I don't know that it is a "wrong ending" though. Just not your cup of tea, like LiT is not my cup of tea. I'm glad you find it beautiful and peaceful. I find it a dull character study of dull people that puts me to sleep...so I guess that means I find it peaceful too.

but have you watched it? (i think that's what he means. )
it says Fall '06 there, Marty McFly

I didn't mean the movie itself just the casting. Poor wording on my part.

I'll make it plain and simple.

I don't like Kirsten Dunst. In anything.

Other than that I'm intrigued by the picture.

I agree. Kirsten Dunst is not a good actress. All I could think of during the Spiderman films is "Let her fall! Let her fall!"

She and Heather Graham give me a headache just watching them.

true that. i'd say my relationship with her in movies has been one in which i 'tolerate' her, yunno? Because she's in a lot of movies i really like.

good call. but i'll still be there for my girl sophia--regardless if people say it's because of her last name.

I have to agree. After visiting Japan several times, the familiar sites and cultural references were interesting but nothing special. Bill Murray is always amusing and Scarlett is attractive, but that doesn't make a movie.

The rest of it was mundane and plodding.

Look, I don't expect car chases. One of my favorites is My Dinner with Andre, but this movie made by anyone else would get lackluster returns. Can't we stop the "he/she is an important filmmaker since he/she is related to..." hype ?

However, she is a much better filmmaker than actor. Godfather 3... yeesh!

i thoroughly enjoyed this film. It had a great story and the acting was tasteful. But what really took me away was the cinematography. Man, the visuals were absolutely perfect in terms of framing and symmetry. Wowz.

I agree Papa

I love this film and the viuals are wonderful. They shot it in under 30 Days for less than $5,000,000 using available and practical lighting and supplementing light only when necassary

Most of the film was shot on a 35mm Aaton with a Movicam Compact for the tighter stuff

They shot Kodak 500T 5263 for the night time exteriors and Kodak 320T 5277 for the daylight

The range of lenses ran between 27mm to 50mm

And there you go; a little insight for you
