Lost In Translation.

Re: Lost In Translation.

I loved it too, Michael.

I'm one to HATE 'chick flics', but honestly, I really enjoyed myself.  It was a great look at mediocre lives...basically, it showed how you CANT just make everything okay when your life is going to shits. It had awesome performances, and some nice cinematography.  I can't believe so many people here didn't like it..

Oh well, to each his own!  :)
.. it was entertaining, but really very pointless in the end. i didnt really care in the end.. nothing happend.. nothing changed... nothing went anywhere.. and i never understood their attraction in the first place.. it seemed unreasonable.. but such is life i guess. anyway despite all this, i though it was good.
i thought it's ending was very meaningful. i was really impressed with how it became more about friendship and guidence then scandal.
Daughter is just playing off of dad's name and talent. Her father practically carried her over the finish line being a Exec. Producer and who knows what else. I think the film was O.K. just a bad casting job, the two had little chemistry. Murray, good man, good actor. Look at us, were bitching about films  ;D All in All, not a bad start for her, we'll be seeing more of her (and her daddy along side) soon I'm sure.
no doubt she's had help, but that's the nature of 'family business'. it happens everywhere. to say she is just playing off his name and talent i disagree. i'm not sure what makes her daddy SOOO talented. but then again i have odd tastes in movies and i've never been floored with his work like alot of other people, so who knows. *shrug*

oh yea, and i thought this was better then her first two movies.

Re: Lost In Translation.

:o

Gasp! Cough! Gag!

What about:

The Godfather 1 and 2 ?!
Dracula ?!
The Black Stallion ?!
The Outsiders ?!
Apocalypse Now ?!
The Conversation ?!

"Not sure what makes him soooooooo talented ?!"

Gasp! Cough! Gasp again!

Re: Lost In Translation.

like i said, i've never been floored with his work.

that dracula though was a-laugh-a-minute. hehe. prolly been 10 years since i saw that one, but i do remember it being awful, but in a funny way.

godfather i'm sure is considered by alot of people to be insanely good or somethin'. it often is competing with Citizen Kane in the "Best Movie Ever" polls (those types of polls are redic... how could something so subjective be... nevermind). In any case, i've been never been personally able to put the movie on the same level with CK *shrug*. but that's just me.

Apoc Now is an interesting peice of cinema, i respect that movie actually alot. out of all his pictures i prolly have the most respect for it. I'm not sure if i could say i enjoy watching it however. Some other movies that i love i have the same type of respect for (Slam, Salesman, stuff by Aronofsky, North by Northwest, etc.) the only difference is, i really enjoy watching them.

so it's just odd with me and coppola, his movies are fine and i understand why people enjoy them, but they just are not my thing, i'm not really into his style usually.

Re: Lost In Translation.

I can dig it. I feel the same about Kubrick. I didn't reach a true appreciation for Coppolla and The Godafather films until I was older.

Re: Lost In Translation.

stuff by Aronofsky, . . .) the only difference is, i really enjoy watching them.

I find it hard to imagine actually enjoying watching "Requiem for a Dream." :o It's self-imposed misery from beginning to end.

Re: Lost In Translation.

As for "Lost in Translation," I just watched it tonight. I don't see it as a "chick flick" at all.

I liked it. I don't think it's genius, and it moved kinda slowly, but it did keep me interested until the end.

Re: Lost In Translation.

Requiem was interesting in my opinion, it was about an hour too long. i know some people who enjoyed it, i'm not sure if i can say i enjoyed it from begining to end, but i really respect him as a director.

Re: Lost In Translation.

John, i feel you with Kubrick too, another superstar director that i fail to really see his genious over the whole catalog of his work. i definately see some very strong things in some of it (2001, Strangelove, and yes, i actually liked EWS), but then there are some of his films that, to me, just don't do it (Shining, Barry Lyndon, Clockwork, etc.)

but like copolla, i do respect him and his work. i guess what i'm trying to say is i don't put people like these guys in the catagory was people i'd say are just making films as money makers. you can tell they actually really deeply care about what they are doing, and i respect that.

*disclaimer* my taste in movies is very odd, so don't be offended

Re: Lost In Translation.

First of all, I liked the film. However, I later found out that it was all about her. I can't stand her. Giavonni R. is playing the role of Spike Jones. I guess for me if I can't respect someone as a person it is a little harder to respect their hard work. Though again, i did like the film.

As for best screenplay, that was straight up bull. Bill Murray made most of that stuff up. Anyway, there is a documentary on the DVD about the making of. Spike Jones did it. I recomend you check it out.

Re: Lost In Translation.

spike > sofia

no doubt. i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he didn't hold a weighty hand over this production... i too saw the DVD behind-the-scenes... he didn't seem to be controling the whole shoot.

but if he did, i could see it.

spike owns me.

Re: Lost In Translation.

The Directors cut? His is def worth it. Michel Gondry as well as Christopher Cunningham's are both worth the money.

Not sure if that's what you were talking about, however, still worth it.

Re: Lost In Translation.

lol

I meant if you knew or had the SPike Jones MV collectoin with B Sides and lil Docs?

Re: Lost In Translation.

i have the whole Directors Series Collection. Gondry is my favorite by far, Gondry i think is one of the most fascinating progressive filmmakers of the last decade, video such as Lucas with the Lid Off and **** are amazing.

the whole series rocks and it's worth having in a DVD collection, in my opinion. Spike is awesome, Cunningham has some really great moments.

get it! get it! get it! all 3 on amazon for like 35 bucks

Re: Lost In Translation.

Yeah that's what I was talking about. ;D

All three are great. I can't recall which who it was but there is a music video that was mostly fimed under water. Yowzas! That was cool.

Spike has a mini doc about some kids that is also worth the $15 the dvd costs alone.

Re: Lost In Translation.

I started watching it 2 nights ago... I fell asleep if that tells you anything. Maybe I'll try again sometime...

Re: Lost In Translation.

..i somehow made it through it when i watched it one night starting it at 10:30 . it was slow, but i kept waiting for somthing to actually happen. in the end i thought it was pointless, as nothing changed at all. it was like i just spent an hour somthing watching someone mow thier lawn, and go inside and sit down to watch tv. i thought it was good in the sense that it was realistic about what peoples real lives are like, but i didnt get the whoe relationship thng between them, and the attraction between them was not well grounded at all. it was too much of a stretch for me. but in the end, i think it was worth watching just in the sense of watching another independent film , and learning from it.

Re: Lost In Translation.

it had to be an Oscar joke. If I knew all I had to do was write a story about some guy sitting in a bar and I would win for best screenplay well hell!!!! See you all at the Oscar next year :-)

And what about Whale Rider My GOD another Oscar Joke...the child was not even close to the big league actress. Hell the young girl in the film 'Thirteen' was much better.

I think Oscar was having a problem this year of finding any good films.
