Lossless codec?

I tested three codecs this weekend (Cineform Codec, Balackmagic Codec , and Avid Codec) by exporting XDCAM EX from my Premiere Timeline to the given codecs. All of them did the same thing a Cineform, namely clip the whites.

Take a look: http://www.b-mol.com/test/cineform_clipping.jpg

The difference is quite visible if you lower the brightness on a scene. All the brightest areas are lost. Details in the whites are lost.

I had one character in a pink suit overexposed slightly. In the original you can recover the pink by lowering brightness. In the codecs, the suit turns white has lost all details.

What a disaster.

H.264 and Uncompressed 422 do not have that problem.

Dude, you've been told in one of your other threads that Premiere CS5 export to Cineform (avi or mov) will retain superwhites. Stop blaming the codecs - there is something wrong with your installation or workflow.

Might also mention that none of those codecs pretends to be lossless. Try with a lossless codec and see if your results are the same.

When I export UNCOMPRESSED or H264 I don't get the clipping.

Here is the test I did. I exported CINEFORM from the timeline from the original XDCAM. I then place the exported Cineform back on the timeline. I reduce the brightness and contrast on both.

Here are the results. They speak for themselves: http://www.b-mol.com/test/cineform_image_test.jpg
