losing frames during log and transfer

Hi all-

I have a problem with transferring video shot in 720p30. I shot a project today that looks great in the camera and and even in the preview during log and transfer. After the transfer is completed to FCP, it looks like it's skipping frames. I've shot lots of other projects and things have looked great, but I had not come across this before.

There's nothing wrong with the video- as evidenced by it playing well in the camera and in preview for log and transfer. The video makes it all right to the hard drive. It's the move to FCP that's the problem.

The day before I shot some other video in 720p30N that worked out just fine.

Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere someone could help me with? Would clearing preferences work?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

step through the footage frame by frame. Are there really frames missing? Or is FCP just dropping frames on playback? Media stored on slow drives can cause this...system drive or USB drives. You need at least a firewire 400 connection. And the drive needs to be formatted MacOS Extended.

thanks Shane... I do have it on a smaller drive I travel with that's USB. So in theory, since I still have the video on the cards, if I download it again onto a better hard drive- one that you suggest- it should be fine.

I appreciate the information.

Just tried it by dragging the file clip on the desktop of my MacBook Pro and I still have the same issue. I also tried to log and transfer from the card directly and it still happened. It still looked good in log and transfer preview, but not when it actually transferred. Could this still be the issue as far as the hard drive?

The system drive is ALSO not a good drive to use. Typically they are 5400 RPM, and video needs at least 7200RPM. You need a firewire 400 drive connection and drive that is 720RPM or better.

Okay, I'll give it a go tomorrow. Still a bit nervous, though. Would 720p30N run better than 720p30 with the USB drive? That one was fine.

are you saying I should not use USB, then? :)

Thank you for the advice.

I guess I don't get why the native worked and this one didn't . Should the native not have worked?

so here's a wrinkle... I did it using log and capture and the video looked fine. But now I can't figure out how the audio seems to be mixed together on both tracks. If this ends up being my work around, how will I split the audio?

Thanks.

Shane, I appreciate your help. I think I've figured out a workaround if the hard drive thing doesn't work out. I'm sure your idea will work, but I needed some peace of mind before the long trip home tomorrow!

Thanks again.
