you can check them out, but if you want something cheap, the best thing you are going to find I believe is calling some smaller churches and asking them if you could do it for a small donation.
I had a friend that drove 1.75hr out of LA to get to film at a cemetery. usually near LA everyone knows that they can get money off of a location.

just show up on a slow weekday, light a candle or two, and when the coast is clear, roll it...

i was working on this film a couple weeks ago and we were stealing shots on some church steps. no permission or anything and we were using a jib, reflectors, etc.. these ladies come up who have keys and just walk past us, unlock the doors and start to go in. then they came out and invited us all to dinner. crazy.

well, if its a short and don't plan on selling and making money sure, steal the shots.

I always feel its better to ask. specially if its an organization that is supposed to do charity.

But if you have any hopes to get picked up for distribution, you better have your release forms for locations.

Let us know how it turns out.

I have a other scene that requires those underground flourescent lit parking structures like you see in some apartment buildings. I dont have any friends or family that live in those types of buidlings and i dont have acess inside. I have found an underground structure in downtown LA but unfortunately the scene requires four masked men with guns and i dont want to take the chance that someone thinks its a robbery or an attack and ends up arresting me or comfiscating my camera.

any advice?

WOW!!! masked men with guns. If you can Get Permission. But almost everyone that owns a place like the one you are describing would be dumb to let you shoot without Insurance. And I assume Insurance would be through the roof being that you have four masked men with guns. There might be a distinction between real guns and plastic guns, but I'm not sure.

My advice is, get someone that would let you into his building and that is friendly with his neighbors. Use the parking structure, and get tons of lookouts with walkies talkies around the building. at the first sign of trouble they can sound an alarm or something, and MASKS come off immediately (even if its in the middle of the scene) and guns get put away.

Also talking to the residents (if its an apartment bldg.) letting them know that it is a film that will have 4 masked men with guns and not to call the cops.

If you have a bunch of lights, a camera, and crew members in reflective vests yelling "cut, ok lets try that again" alot it reduces your chances of the police showing up for a man with a gun call, they will. The more you look like a crew the less masked men etc draw negative attention, but the more you may get asked for a permit.

Make a big huge HAND MADE sign and display it on the opposite side of shoot to te crew that says, "FILMING IN PROGRESS" So that nobody will think it is a real kidnapping or guys with guns. Make sure that the guys with guns are always surrounded by film crew looking people.
