This is an old video, but Peter Jackson and others discuss the power of digital color grading back in 2001.

Andrew Lesnie DOP describes how "digital color grading is basically scanning a film negative into a digital format so you can put it on a monitor and you can manipulate the image with a huge variety of tools..."

Back then an "evolving process". Interesting stuff.

Some good discussion of when it's appropriate and most effective as well, as opposed to just disregarding the whole thought process until post.
