Looping work flow...

Aggghhhhhh!!!!!!

Ok, now that that is off my chest: I had the luck to shoot with some gerear pro oprerators as Director and DP... but we moved fast and they didn't care about audio... I said I would loop as much as we needed to but I guess that's probably one of the first things you guys would have told me not to say on a set if you were there... together with a swift smak to the back of my head... :) the locations that we were forced to use didn't help either... can you say HIGHWAY!!!

One benefit: since I will have to re-record 90% might as well do all 100%... so I will get to record at 24/96 as opposed to the HVX on-camera recording ... not really a positive thing... I am sure you guys will tell me I should have gotten the real dialogue with the HVX if I could cause it would match perfectly...

So... I got my little walk in closet sound booth set up and I recorded some dialogue... picked up some room tone with the laptop using the same mixer... all seems good, but I am staring at Mt. Everest and I got my shoelaces for rope...

I would love it if you guys gave me some pointers on how to set up my process to speed things up and what not... you know... just random pointers from those who've done this many times before...

I haven LCD I could set up in there if that's standard practice... I did a VO for MTV where I translated Punk'd to spanish and they set me up in a sound booth with the script... no monitor... but I am thinking I should not get the monitor in there because of the noise it might make, plus it would be distracting, and instead get some speakers to quickly play back the line to be re-recorded so my talent can replicate it immediately after hearing it...

I am editing in Vegas 7.0 and I am hooked up like so:
Mic > MixPre > Tascam US-122 > Sound Forge

also, is there a way to set up so I can use the little mic on the MixPre to talk into the speakers in the booth? I have the MixPre in there so I can give the talent headphones...

I hate to even wade in on this one but...
first the easy, if the talent is on headphones from the MixPre they will hear the slate mic.

I can only give generalities since I don't know VEGAS at all and haven't used Sound Forge in years.

Recording ADR to any two track recorder is, ah, very problematic. Recording ADR with out sync picture is, well much worse than problematic. It doesn't sound like you have the tools that are likely to make this a pleasant experience.

We setup beep tones before the bit we are going to record. I would preferv a screen wipe but to set that up looks like about 6-7 grand so we stayed with the beeps. That would be three beeps, one sec apart and space so that the action or line starts where the fourth beep would be. You can also do it with them hearing the line and you recording them repeating it. The problem with that is that they are always speaking out of sync and you need to move the take just to see if it's close to visual sync.

I can't think of any good reason to shoot your ADR at 96.

You will need (or REALLY want) the equivalent of VocAlign. I don't know what that would be on your platforms. With out it you will be working your tail off trying to get tight sync. Of course if you tracks are really trashed it won't help so ???

If the director is around while your recording REMIND him/her that this is not an opportunity to "improve" the performance, you need to "match" it.

Try to get your vocal room pretty dead, or you will have too much "room" on it and it will be hard to make it believable as out doors.

Good luck

yup... I've seen the real work flow and what I am setting out to doing is... well... like a few hara-kiris a day for two weeks straight... :)

but... this is what I got and luckily I am absurdly patient and OCD when I need to be...

I am, like you said... recording a line, then moving it around to try to match the lips... for long dialogue I am planning on breaking it up into short segments but not too sure if that would help since I will then have to deal with the problem of making all separate recordings sound the same...

I can't get the headphones to reach into the closet without an extension so I guess I should look for one... then I can have the slate mic and gain next to me wich will help me a ton since now I am going back and forth in there to adjust the gain!!! aghhh...!!!! lol

thank you very much for taking the time to reply... I love to hear from you guys, it really helps me... and please remember that I know that I am trying to build a house with a too-kit from "Toys R US" :)

I bought a 25ft. extension:

not the best I am sure but I hope it does a decent job... this will definitely help a lot... especially if I can somehow get the slate mic to pick up the playback from the speakers and then I'll be able to play the clip to my talent and record right after... is there a "right" way to do that with my equipment?
