Looking to upgrade my canon xa10 and 25 with something better

Hello,

I'm looking into upgrading my canon xa10 and xa25 camcorders into something much better. Preferably ones with interchangeable lenses, 10 or 12 bit color recording either prores or dnxhd format. 120fps max and with XLR and LCD screen. I've seen some that don't have any screen.(bonus if it's 4k) Does anyone know of any camcorders that have these features but that is still within the price range of the xa10 and xa25? Doesn't have to be exactly the same price but currently b&h is selling the 10 and 25 for $2.495.00 USD I would my budget to be under 3,000 per camera.

I hope this is doable. I really want to grow my film making and offer the best quality I can and currently the canon 10 and 25 isn't meeting what I need anymore.

For the price you're asking, you'll need to sacrifice a few things.

Sony FS5 comes close to ticking all the boxes but is closer to $5000 - more if you want the continuous 120p upgrade. It is 10-bit for 1080p only, and uses a long-gop codec (ie the opposite of Prores or DNxHD).

Hello…

So: something much better, interchangeable lenses, 10-12bit, ProRes/DNxHD, 120fps, XLR and LCD screen. Oh, and 4k would be nice.

Budget – under $3k

Allright, let us know when you find something!

PS. I don't mean to be mean. I realise what you're writing is everybody's thought process. But did you at ANY point touch base with the reality of the current camera market and what features you get at what price? You will end up with a much larger and/or much more expensive camera system than you have currently. Or, you will need to start trimming down your list and separate the need to have from the nice to have. Blackmagic tends to deliver many "checkboxes" per dollar and Sony can be aggressive too, as mentioned above.

okay thanks.

The JVC GY-LS300 is the closest budget option that comes to mind; it's only 8-bit though, and I have no idea how well it performs.

You listed your camera budget, but what's your lens budget, or do you already have some lenses?

The URSA Mini 4K has every single one of those specs.

You can sometimes find them on eBay brand new for $2300-$2500 (best offer). Body-alone in the store is $3K. Will need about another $500-$600 (conservative) in accessories.

Another option...

BMPC 4K (discontinued) is less than $2K and offers the same specs above minus the high framerates and XLR (4K/30p max). Recording to SSDs is a bonus.

Both cameras share the same sensor.

Have you considered supplementing what you already have by adding something along the lines of a Panasonic GH5?

I just can't in good faith suggest any modern camcorder style camera in your price range, knowing they will be obsolete in 18 months.

Ursa Mini 4k as mentioned above. It would be quite a bit different than shooting with a canon camcorder, as it's more of a cinema style camera than camcorder. It's pretty terrible in low light, as well, and I generally wouldn't recommend it for run n gun type shooting. If autofocus is important to you, that makes life quite a bit more difficult, as there aren't a whole lot of large sensor, interchangeable lens camera that do autofocus well for cheap (Canon C100, but it isn't 4k) Not a ton of cameras do internal prores/dnxhd, either, especially for $3000. Blackmagic cameras being the exception.

If you drop the interchangeable lens and the internal prores, the DVX200 or some of the 1" camcorders from Sony would fit the bill. A Canon C100 has interchangeable lenses and can be found for cheap and I'd say is a step up from a camcorder, but doesn't hit the 4k or 10 bit requirements. A GH5 with the XLR module checks some of your boxes, but form factor is quite a bit different than a camcorder.
