Looking to Purchase a VTR to complement my DVX100a

I am looking to Purchase a VTR to complement my DVX100a.
I only want to spend around $1000 give or take a few hundred bucks. (Hard I know!)

I haven't done much research on VTR's but it is time I purchased one. I am afraid that I am wearing out my DVX capturing DV and it is not very convienent using the DVX as a VTR.

I am looking for the best bang for my buck (features to the dollar). I only shoot in progressive 24pa or 30p and want a VTR that will be compatible with my DVX features.

Can you guys suggest a decent VTR that will give me what I need. I have looked at the panasonic AG-DV2500 but I figure there might be some others out there that might be a better value.

Right now I am just connecting the DVX via firewire to the computer setting up a full tape in/out capture in Vegas 5 and walking away. Come back a hour later and set up the capture the for next tape. Nothing spectacular. But I do want a machine that will give me the same reliability and dropout free playback as my dvx. I might in the future decide to output back to DV as well. I also don't really want to have to deal with a Mini to Full Size tape converter cartridge but will deal with it if I have to.

Any Extra features would be nice but not necessary at this time in my life.

Any Suggestions would help a lot.

Thanks in Advance! ;D

Hello Hart, I sell a couple decks in your range, and a couple out of it:

http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=GVD1000

http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=BRDV3000U

http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AGDV2500

http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=DSR11

I have special DVXuser prices on all the decks. But don't forget, any small DV camera of good quality will do the job of a deck. I own a Sony DSR-11 primarily due to the fact that it allows me to use large DV tapes, so that I can layoff a 2-hr. show onto one tape rather than 2. Email me at rush@evsonline.com if you have further questions.

Sounds like you could get away with buying a $300 consumer miniDV cam to use as a deck for the moment.

while we're on the topic of decks (or even consumer cams used only for capture and editing), what is the protocol for dealing with tape brands? must you be as strict as you are with your actual DVX - like if i run different tape brands through the deck, will those actual tapes become contaminated per say and then introduce lube gunk into my dvx if i decide to stick them back in for some reason?

Re: Looking to Purchase a VTR to complement my DVX

I have been using sony wet lube tapes forever and don't get any dropouts unless I use a cheap camera.

I do have a consumer camera a $400 JVC, but it will always create drop outs in the video at least once a tape. So I don't want to go that route. Plus I won't put a tape back in my camera that has been used in any other device. My camera has been STD free for a year or so now and I would like to keep it that way. STD's = Dropouts! ;D

Let me know which of you guys are using these decks that rush has decribed and what you think of them. I kinda like the one with the LCD display cause I can see where the tape is before firing up the PC. But is it got consumer quality heads?

I was considering getting a DV Deck also, but lately, I've been considering abandoning that idea and just getting a FireStore FS-4 instead.  Since, the Camcorder records to the tape at the same time, it would be the backup.  The HD Recorder wouldn't have any dropouts, and you could edit instantly.

Can anyone think of any other compelling reasons why I would want to get a DV Deck vs. a portable recording device?

Does the DVX100a support recording to the Firestor without a tape in the deck? I heard a rumor that it did not.

Is this true. Becuase I have also considered the firestore. Even the FS-1 Looks pretty good even though it is bulky.

I can use it as a tripod weight. ;D

Is EVS planning on carrying the FS-4. Looks like it is the way to go. I will probably by 2 of them. Looks like they haven't started shipping them yet. :-[

We will carry the FS-4 (Focus Enhancements ASYF083901) when it becomes available, and we will have a DVXuser discount better than B&H.

The only compelling reasons I have for getting a deck are: I do editing at night and on weekends. When a customer brings me a DV tape, I would never put it in my camera for PB into the computer. Also sometimes they bring large DV or DVCAM. Decks are just built sturdier. I have thrown every size and brand of tape, even wiped dirt (like mud-dirt ;D) off a cheap TDK tape and threw it into my DSR-11, and it still lasted 2 years with no problems at all. That's a lot to ask of a camera. :)

If you don't do client work, or don't require laying off to large cassettes, it is possible that you could live with an FS-4 and another small DV camera with minor inconveniences. ;)

I think I will go with the FS-4. Let us know when they are available with a post or something.

Thanks ;D

I noticed that you can order for $599.95 at the Academic Superstore. Not sure if that is a student price, or not.

Sweet what is the website. I am going to try a search for it.

I want it now!!! I hate it when they advertise a product coming out and don't release it when they say they are.

Come on it's december already. I want my christmas toys! ;D

I saw a model from panasonic with one of the guys. Model No is AG-DV1 DC E. Its a cute little thing. I liked it at the first look and it works on the same battery we use for the camera. Did anyone know how good it is for professional use?

I'm looking for a hard disk recorder, too, and several people have recommended the FS-4. But I noticed that there are already systems available from Nnovia (QC40, QC80). Has any one had experience with these systems, and can you give a comparison between Firestore and Nnovia?

I can't yet give an accurate comparison, since I have not played with the FS-4 yet. PS, I called Focus Enhancements, and they are shipping them end of next week. I can only say this about the nnovia: They are used by many police agencies for recording police car cameras, since they are very rugged even in hot pursuits. You can drop one while recording and it won't miss a beat. They are truly fantastic drives. I am eager to check out the FS-4 's though, they are cool looking!
