Looking to get a render farm, need some suggestions

Hi guys,

So I've been working on a feature film and we have dissected it into parts. Using HDV and a lot of magic bullet effects for colour correction etc. and what we have learnt from the experience is if you are working with just two systems....leave colour correction, a very cpu intensive thing, last.

The rendering of the sequences can take a whole night sometimes due to the complexity and I've been interested in getting a render farm system in place to alleviate some of the stress from my computers.

I was referred to this one here: http://www.boxxtech.com/products/renderPRO/pro_overview.asp

I will definitely consider something like this, however, before I jump the gun, I'd like to find out if anyone here has any alternatives for a render farm that may be cheaper and just as effective for my needs.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'd price out a comparable server from HP or Dell... I would guess you'd get more bang for your buck that way.

You have to ask for the prices via e-mail?

Fishy!

I know, that boxxtech is a respected company, but not putting a price tag on a product? Dubious to say the least - I bet the price is insane for the standard components you get.

What´s so special inside that renderPRO12?

Super Micro X8DT3-F Board $450
2 Xeon™ 5600 Series Six Core Processors max. $1000 each
Standard HDs, power supply and a fancy box - nothing magic, lets say an other $600

So it is worth about $3050 - I wonder what they ask.

servers would be more cost effective and scalable. instead of render farm specific software, you use virtualization to make multiple server look like one powerful computer that will work on any software.
works like raid hdds.

Ah yes, I was recommended the server route today however, I want to focus on power as well as physical footprint. Meaning, I would like probably just a powerful tower handling the renders and not a bunch of systems packed into a corner.

This is possible right?

servers are mounted one over the other and take much smaller footprint than towers.

in the same space that you will place two towers side by side, you could place maybe 4 or 5 servers(much more if you count the area not taken in the room above the tower), actually they take much less space since you can place them in the "corner" like you mentioned as opposed to the regular tower placement in general.

i did not mention the fact that i don't see any of that necessary for rendering one movie, how much time do you expect to work on the movie in post production and how much time would it take the movie to render once the movie is finished. if it takes weeks and months to do the post production and a day for the rendering i don't see the problem. it's not going to change anything if you brought the rendering time to 4 hours from 20, even if you can decrease the time that much by throwing money at it.

Thanks for the explanation and the advice. I will consider my requirements and my actions and come to a conclusion especially with the info I got here. :)
