Looking to film an HD project in 4:3 aspect ratio need help with settings

Hello HVX/HPX users,

I was thinking about filming a short skating project using my HVX200 and HPX170 cameras while trying to emulate the vx2100 (or any SD mini dv for that matter) aspect of 4:3 but with updated image quality of an HD camera.
Is there a way i can film in 720/1080 but with a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9.
Is shooting in 480i the only option for 4:3?

Please let me know what you folks think.

Thanks,
Aaron

You should have the option of putting 4:3 frame lines/safety bars in the VF/monitor. Just shoot with everything contained within that frame and crop/extract the 4:3 in post.

And if you don't have guides, shoot one test clip and then crop it in post to what you like, and then playback the clip again in the camera and put black tape over the LCD to match the clip in post.

That's what some people did back in the day for similar purposes.

Way back in the dark day, I even saw guys take grease pencils to EVF's and mark them for other than 4:3 aspect ratios.

I went to
Menu
7 Dispalay Setups
Safety Zone - 4:3

I think what i'll do is shoot in normal 720p and just runt this setting in my veiwfinder.
Then i'll create a 4:3 timeline in Adobe, drag the clips in and poof, a 4:3 HD video.
I think we might use some old VHS Handicam footy as b roll and might mix in a few vx2100 shots as well.
Ha I'm excited to give this a go.
Thanks for you're help folks!!!
