looking for the right vehicle

Here in a few months I'm packing up all my gear and driving across the country to live in San Diego for the summer (at least), but my current car won't get me there so since I just graduated college my parents are gonna help me out a little bit to get me a decent car. I'm looking for something that I can put all my gear in (dolly, camera, tripods, lights, etc.) but also something that gets really good gas mileage. I'm thinking a hatchback might be my best bet? I was looking at the Volkswagon Golf/GTI but I've heard they're a pain to get worked on if they have problems. Any suggestions out there?

I remember the last time someone asked there were a bunch of folks with Honda Elements. Honda has a pretty good rep for reliability too and would likely maintain its resale value better than a Wabbit. Since you're just out of school you don't need any surprise expenses.

We recently drove over 10K miles across the country to shoot a doc in over 30 states. I went out and bought a 2007 Nissan Versa for around $13K. It's real roomy inside, plenty to carry equipment and gets great gas mileage. It drove smoothe the entire trip and was quite comfortable. You can get a THULE for the roof to carry extra equip.

I swear on it, best traveling filmmaker vehicle ever. :)

Jetta wagon? 2003 Tdi can be had for about $13 - $16k. Can't beat 45 m.p.g. I'm looking at 05s right now.

unfortunately my family is far from rich so my price range is probably 8,000 or less. I appreciate all the feedback, keep it coming...
