Looking for possible script fix for exposure

Trying for timelapse sunset here -

Using the Canon 20D and timer I got about 370 images of a gorgeous sunset but discovered I didn't program the camera correctly. As the sun peeks in/out of low clouds the exposure jumps around way too much.
I cannot spend tons of time trying to figure out if I can write a script in Vegas 7 that could correct at least some of the wild frame to frame exposure variations on the timeline.
Not looking for the final detailed solution, only want to know if I would be wasting my time trying to script this.

Yup, I was afraid of that.
Just thought there might be a way to script track levels or some other filter, and key them to a static value.

That's a good idea, epicedium. I need to climb out of this box every so often and try different ways.
