Of course the guy should have to answer questions. But comparing the guy to human trafficers and that other crap isn't "just asking" to answer questions. And pretending that it is is hypocracy. This site doesn't owe ANYONE special consideration. Not you or me or anybody else. If you're not a moderator you're a guest, right? And you call that welcome courteous? Not in my book brother. By the way, when do you get most upset, when you are sincere and someone accusses you of being insincere, or when you're bullshitting and they accuse you of it?

A brand new member named Mad SIN Cinema... trying to raise money to make a film about child porn and sex slavery... and following up his first post with an attitude of entitlement based on the logic that others pay $1K for a "thanks"... set himself up for a tougher time then he would have had if he came into the forum like 99.9% of the other membership does.

If you kick in the door guns a blazin'... don't be surprised if a couple people shoot back.

O.K., I'll give you then benefit of the doubt. My apologies. Just one question though. When you present yourself as a filmmaker and someone say "What do you do for a living?", that doesn't sting just a little bit?Another question for all to whom this applies: Since when did you have to give first before you get on this site? I've been here a long time and it seems to me most first time posters are looking for help not offering it.
Here's my point:
I don't know what this guy works with, but I assume he's not a professional filmmaker in the sense that it's not where his main income comes from.

So for the argument's sake, let's say he's a gardener.

Now let's say I'm walking into his office and say:

"Hi, I'm looking for a bunch of gardeners to fix up my front yard. Everyone gets three square feet to take care of in any way they choose and in return, just in case anyone would ask who does the yard work at my place, I'll tell them the names of everyone.
The people who make their three square feet especially spectacular to look at, I will mention before all the other names of course.
To get the privlilege of doing a small piece of my yard work, you'd only have to pay me a buck and that's a great deal, because I know there are those who would have to pay a whole lot more on other yards oh and by the way when I eventually sell my house I will give a piece of it to charity."

I'm not the least bit sarcastic here. I just think it's an absurd request, that's all. Lots of people on this website do this for a living, and judging from people's reactions to Craigslist adds that you see here all the time, it's not the right place at all to make a request like this. The guy is in the wrong forum.

I've been in the boardroom asking perfect strangers for money for projects. It helps when the creator and the customer / client / partner have a shared interest in the resutling work. A credit on IMDB might be worth something to a lot of people who don't have one. A credit in a viral project is worthless in most cases. Approaching a group of strangers with a defensive attitude and little to back up your project in the way of existing work is a surefire way to be shown the door. What this thread always was was... SPAM. Members who are involved in the community will get the same honest feedback when they present their raw concepts here, but they will get this with the benefit of being familiar to the people giving it.

Long-term members and even moderators are subjected to the same questions and scrutiny (as new members are) when presenting their projects. What is the project about? How is it relevant? How will viewers find it relatable? The business-related questions and concerns are often diminished because we've worked together through the forum. There is a foundation of trust. But the project still needs to make sense from a creative and business standpoint.

I'm not trying to defend the guy, I know nothing about him. I'm just calling for a little civility. If that's too much for you guys, well then, hey, carry on.

Rsbush, this was the most civil thread I have ever seen here when the OP attempted what he did. Nobody flew off the handle, and the majority of people criticizing the OP's approach still gave him the benefit of the doubt by asking for more information and gave him a chance to assuage the skepticism in case their impression of him was wrong .

My friend, I don't know what other forums you visit, but on some of the other forums I am on, the OP would have been roasted on a spit for what he did. His lineage would have been called into question. None of that was done here. He was asked to give the membership more info, and he failed to do that. Plus he adopted an attitude of superiority towards the membership when he was asked those questions. Granted this is a free forum but that does not mean he can just walk in with his hand out without answering a bunch of tough questions first. And his introduction to the rest of us who call this forum "home" (I sure do) was not a good one, which may have contributed to our skepticism.

This thread had loads civility towards the OP.

I think one thing this thread points out is what an elusive concept netiquette is- from "community" to "civil", from "tone" to "acceptable/unacceptable behavior".

It isn't uncivil to tell the OP, a new member with no previous interaction with our membership, that his plan has some holes in it. It comes across (based on his first posts, before anyone got more pointed in their remarks) as an exploitative offer. Producers contribute their time, equipment and creative effort to making a video. For free. Then, they assign their rights to this work to an unknown, unproven (as far as we know) producer. Then, they attach his name to it, as if he created it. If you rally a number of YouTube hits to their project, you receive a credit (in a venue not defined by the OP, IMDB or something similar might be useful to some members) for being an associate producer. It all comes across as another one of those less-than-equitable deals you see on Craigslist and I think a lot of people who work in the trades are tired of these situations that offer to undervalue our work while turning a profit for the party offering the "gig".

I myself wasn't calling anything civil or uncivil. I'm not deciding, merely observing the range of responses and reactions, from rsbush to Doc, for example.
And the range of tone on this forum vs others- ie Avid (been there), Doc's other forum, etc.
And I certainly wouldn't offer my services (or cash) to this offer, nor accept 99.9% of the CL gigs.

But then, remember- democracy is a messy process, but also that with freedom, comes responsibility... :)

I'm just calling for a little civility. If that's too much for you guys, well then, hey, carry on.

rsbush, I think you're way out of line with your not-so-subtle jabs at the other members who have participated in this thread. Perhaps you should heed your own advice.

I think what happens in a lot of cases (and not just in this thread, or on this forum, but across the internet) is that when somebody new comes in and violates a particular forum's "netiquette..." every member of that forum feels the need to make their own comment, or give their own advice, or take their own sarcastic jab... and most of them are about 95% the same within their category. So it can be perceived as "piling on" the n00b because of the sheer volume.

Again, not meant as a criticism of anyone here, just something that I've seen on a few occasions. I just wonder sometimes, "how many people have to say the same thing on a thread?"

Again, I am going to put forth that this is a "sticky-worthy" thread.

Mainly to educate anyone joining DVXUser solely to reach out for funding for their project. There will be hard questions asked of the requester, and they need to know this. And this thread will give them the heads up, if they read it.

Plus, if you can distill all the posts down to info only, there is some valuable advice and knowledge that has been put forth here for anyone seeking to crowd-fund their project, in general.

Nobody flew off the handle, and the majority of people criticizing the OP's approach still gave him the benefit of the doubt by asking for more information and gave him a chance to assuage the skepticism in case their impression of him was wrong.

Exactly.

I think that's the thing to take away from all this is the fact that for most of the 8 pages of this thread so far, people have been debating etiquitte, fairness and politeness. In most other places, it would be 8 pages of people blasting the OP, and yelling and cursing at each other in the process.

If a few snide comments is a bad as it gets, I think we've still got a pretty good thing gonig here.

I'm not trying to defend the guy, I know nothing about him. I'm just calling for a little civility. If that's too much for you guys, well then, hey, carry on.

It's not too much to ask... But, it seems you may be focusing on the minority of remarks, rather than the majority in this thread... seems to me the majority has been quite respectful and/or offered valuable feedback on his approach. even though, if I do say myself, not even bothering to read the guidelines here before posting and asking for money is pretty disrespectful to the community at large, imo. That said, o.p. has the opportunity to make his case better. but, if he isn't going to bother to come back and participate in the thread he created and answer some questions from the people he is soliciting money/work from, then there isn't much need for this thread to continue.

At the very least, I hope he will take it all as a lesson to refine his approach in the future, b/c I suspect he will get much harsher responses on other forums. I bet if he came back with a more clear vision and a better marketing pitch in this thread, he might just find people willing to help him refine it further...

EDIT:He's gotten 8 pages worth of free press already... He should take advantage of that and try to win some of these people over :) Pull up a chair... do it like the rules say.... you can do your fundraising campaigns here for free... all we ask in return is that you create and maintain a production journal on dvxuser for your project. Which, 1, will show you are serious, and 2, it can be educational for the o.p. and the readers of the thread to be able to follow people in their process and learn from their mistakes and successes... It seems a mighty fair trade to me... tap into our 450,000 plus unique visitors last month, and contribute back to the site by maintaining a production journal for your project.

I'm going to go ahead and close this down for the time being... Don't think there is anything new to come of it.

I would encourage the o.p. to try again if he'd like... but, to do it under proper forum guidelines... Please come and start a user films journal in the user films section for your project. I'd encourage him to solicit advice from some of the very qualified, very experienced people here, rather than money. There are some smart dudes and dudette's here. Folks who have successfully done what he is attempting to do, and many would be more than happy to offer their advice and input if asked. Obviously, he didn't get off on a great foot... but, i bet some folks would find a bit of respect for him if he could acknowledge that and use this place as a source for information on how to improve his pitch, and would be happy to help.
