Looking for people who want to make an easy video in exchange for credit

Here's an example of a successful Kickstarter funding I helped with here in DVXUser. The director is a friend and very talented. I thought I'd try to help him get it funded and personally kicked-in myself.
(as I have helped other members here with funds for their own projects)

As you'll see, a friendly post with links to the Kickstarter project, The filmmakers personal site and the Facebook page for the film. I didn't repeatedly 'bump' the thread, being respectful of others in the community. There's tons of information on the Kickstarter page as well as a personal introduction video from the director. His credits are listed and he would even send you a copy of the script if you were interested. All in all, a very organized, professional plan.

Hope this helps.

Well I watched the promo, and I'm trying to look past all these posts and be objective.

It appears you looked up some statistics, shot some video of your little sister and added creepy color correction. Is that all there is?

I mean -- what's your connection to this situation? The promo didn't seem to indicate you had any. That's a lack of credibility.

Imo, the OP has been nothing but evasive and uncooperative..

And understand that I still have the stench of Joe Dono in my nose.

MadSinCinema, I have a couple of questions that I hope you can clarify.

1. If you can make the movie for $500, where does the $75,000 figure come from? How will you invest that money in the project?
2. Do you have videos discussing human trafficking? Do you have a website dedicated to the issue?
3. Is your story the best vehicle for raising awareness? How would it be more effective than a documentary?

Just love the way you guys are justifying your sarcastic "just trying to be helpful" comments. Really funny and really disappointing at the same time!

I don't think we're reading the same thread. The OP got reasonable replies considering how he introduced himself to the forum (he just registered yesterday and this is his first post... "fund my film")... After some skepticism... he replies pretty arrogantly, stating that people pay $1K for a "thanks" credit... etc. (read his reply on the first page).

After that I see a lot of potentially REALLY helpful advice... that, since it's TEXT... you can read it as sarcastic or whatever you like, but the words are the words. Nothing sarcastic or "attacking"(?) I didn't reply quickly, but tried to offer genuinely helpful advice... in a neutral manner... at least up until this very post.

If you click through the links, read about the project and watch the vids... this isn't a doc... it's a regular indi-film about a social problem... with fictional characters, etc. So contributors are being asked to "raise awareness" by funding this project... and point people back to this project to also promote and fund it... in the name of an otherwise noble cause.

Matt,I don't consider your post or Pookies post to be sarcastic, but all the others on the first page either took a good shot before giving advice or we're just outright sarcastic. Clever maybe but not nice. All the considerate advice except yours came after what almost anyone would perceive as an unwelcoming reception. I doubt that the guy is around anymore to get it though.

Implicitly comparing the OP, however 'shady', to Joe Dono is a stretch. As far as I can tell, nothing illegal is happening here.

Absolutely not. There was nothing sarcastic about my post at all, and it was definetly not meant as a shot at the guy.

O.K., I'll give you then benefit of the doubt. My apologies. Just one question though. When you present yourself as a filmmaker and someone say "What do you do for a living?", that doesn't sting just a little bit?Another question for all to whom this applies: Since when did you have to give first before you get on this site? I've been here a long time and it seems to me most first time posters are looking for help not offering it.

True, but when it comes to asking for money, that is a different animal than asking for advice. Me giving out a bit of advice does not actually take food out of my mouth or away from paying bills. It is time when I am not otherwise occupied. But when someone asks for my hard-earned money for their project, you better believe I want to know what the project is, who is doing it, what experience is involved in the project......etc. I don't just blindly give money to people, I am not rich. And yes, even a dollar is important to me in this economy.

Rsbush,

Now everyone here is a professional in the industry. I think its only about 40% pros.

Doc, I understand that part. What I don't get is people equating 1$ with an infinite sum. That "any transgression is as bad as the worst transgression" mentality. Never got that. Never will. And going straight at the problem as Pookie did and even offering unsolicited advice as Matt did seems perfectly acceptable to me. The other comments struck me as sideways, snide and sarcastic, Hell I thought I was on the old Avid forum for minute. That place was horrible, I'd truly hate to see this place become like that.

It's perfectly fair to ask someone for their qualifications, advisable even. But HOW you ask is important, especially as it is a reflection of your professionalism.

....and there you have it... the answer to the original poster.

Agreed... and to follow up on why people would react as they did for only $1... please click the OPs link and see his solicitations for every amount, from $1 up to $5K.

If a person asks for no money initially, but signs on selling, via a link... say, toothbrushes... and perhaps he says he wants to make a film about the problem of dental hygiene... or the lack of dental care in 3rd world countries, but his actual project is a narrative about a kid with bad teeth... yet, he's selling toothbrushes. I don't care how potentially altruistic his intentions may be... it's not the $1... or the selling/promoting of toothbrushes... or how important I think the cause of promoting good dental hygiene is... NORMALLY... we delete spam. Spam is a first post from an unknown, who registered and posted only to sell something.

Since this guy gave at least some back-story... giving the impression that he didn't come here ONLY to sell something (but quite nearly... I mean, c'mon... FIRST post essentially says... including the title, paraphrased... "fund my film".)... anyway... since he gave some convincing back-story... his post was allowed to stand... NORMALLY a post like this would have been nuked immediately... only because of the basic facts... that he (apparently) only registered here to sell something. It doesn't matter if it's $.01... $1... toothbrushes... or film credits. If the OP truly believes in his cause... and this wasn't primarily a money making idea... or if he is/was a real fan of this site... then he should be thick-skinned enough to be vetted by the community that he wants to support him. It's totally reasonable... and the world of film production gets way way worse then this... This is nothing (in the way of a tough challenge). All the guy has to do is answer some easy questions... and if that's a turn-off... or he's somehow above that... then I doubt the rest of his intentions.

Also... click the link, there are only (20) $1 "slots"... then it jumps to $10, etc. Again, the amount is irrelevant anyway... spam is spam. If a guy's first post, on the day he registers, is a solicitation of any kind... that's spam.

Letting this thread stand was already a courtesy to the OP... and he could answer some questions and become a part of the community... if he doesn't address anything from this thread... then that's all the proof you need.

So now we"ve moved from "just asking" to "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen?

I defended this thread when it just started... even though it looked, smelled, and acted like spam.

It's not a matter of taking the heat or anything else... it's a spam thread. A spam thread is one where somebody registers only to sell something. Again... (20) $1 "slots"... then up from there... and again, the amount doesn't matter anyway. If somebody posts a thread selling toothpicks for a penny... but packages that in a "fund my movie to save the rain-forests". Who cares? It's STILL spam. You're only proving that giving potential spam a chance gains nothing.

Why not answer questions? Why only (20) $1 slots? Why not accept anything? Why not say something of pre-pro or a plan vs. ordinary shots of an average little girl in a suburban neighborhood? (i.e. where's the thought or effort behind this thing that others are supposed to invest in?) Where's another finished project people can see?

Frankly... it's PREDATORY for a guy to come in and try to raise money... for himself... ESPECIALLY under the veil of a public service or social problem... and to think that guy shouldn't have to answer any questions about his plan, project, or intentions? If anything... we've been way cool to the guy.

If the guy couldn't take this heat, then what's he going to bring to the very topic he wants to work against? There are a lot bigger challenges then THIS to make a decent film... Jeez... the guy's lucky he got people talking this much about it. If he came back and was a presence in this thread... he'd actually have a bigger following then he would have if the thread just faded into the archives with only a few replies.

This site doesn't owe first time registers and first time posters who look and act like spammers... special consideration over other spammers who are selling something... This guy was given a courtesy, a chance to make his case... and he (so far) has chosen not to.
