Looking for NLE for High School

I'm in charge of finding an NLE for my high school, and I'm not sure what to get. I should be able to get anything $500 or less, and we have Windows computers. I use Vegas Pro 8 at home, and I love it, but I'm not sure if it's the best software to teach other kids how to edit. I guess what I'd really like is the best of both worlds: something easy to use for people who've never used NLEs before, and something powerful for when I use it. Are there any NLEs out there that would be good for this, or is Vegas my best option?

Thanks in advance!

(Note: we're currently editing HDV, but it would be nice to have the option to upgrade to XDCAM EX, DVCPRO HD, or something like that.)

If you know VEGAS well, I'd stick with it...

I would think you or the school qualifies for an "educational" discount

Well, our company has used it to edit two feature films, the second of which just played the Palm Springs International Film Festival. So I would say it is powerful enough for you.

It's drawbacks are a unique workflow that does not translate well to other NLEs, so your kids will have to rethink their approach to editing if they move on to FCP or Premiere later, and its inability to work well with other post-production softtware.

But i love it. And I think for those completely new to editing, its easier to learn than any NLE out there.
