Looking for help with CS5 optimization.

Hello looking for some advice on how to increase my render and exporting time by taking advantage of the 64 bit version I just updated to on my MAC Pro 1.1

Unfortunately I cannot at this time take advantage of the mercury playback engine as the Cuda nVidia board will not work with my 1.1 version of the MAC Pro so...Am I left with upgrading RAM and Harddrive. What I currently have is 8 g ram and and 250 g harddrive 7200 rpm. my files are on a external LaCie drive.

Most of my work is 5 -15 min corporate training videos and some green screen technology.

What is the best way to configure my memory allocation, Cache files, etc to take advantage of this new 64 bit environment

Any help would be appreciated.

Lindsey

How is your external HD connected? What format of footage are you editing? I imagine that, in general, speeding up your disk throughput will give the best bang fir the buck. You can have four internal HDs; use all those slots to advantage. Make sure none of your media or temporary files are on the main hd. Without knowing more about your typical projects it's hard to give more detail…

Thanks for the reply its firewired 800 and no media on HD will check on the temp files what would that do?

There are two primary ways to significantly speed up rendering and exports. The first is to get a newer, faster CPU. The second is to use an nVidia card with hardware acceleration. The first speeds up everything, the second speeds up some things.

That's pretty much it. Anything else you can do will be incremental compared to those two.

What types of processing do you typically do on your projects? Straight cuts? CC? Lots of transitions? What operations slow you down the most? What are your acquisition and final formats? Do you tend to do much multicam work? Describe a typical project in detail and we can help more! Jon's advice is good for many situations that involve heavy processing. My advice is good for situations with more data throughput and potential drive thrashing, where effects processing is not the major bottleneck.

Thank you,

content source is from sony dvcam tape I have started to shoot HD thinking that someday I will be provide HD content to our website. typical final output is h.264 mp4s 675 x 450 min bit is 3 max is 4 vbr1 pass. I also do produce content for annual sales meetings shown via dvd. Most of this work is mp4 thou, that support our product introductions and training on a website..we are going paperless.
so most are interviews with transitions between graphics done in premiere or after effect or still images . Most tranistions are dissolves between these clips.

Some green screen work is being done which kills me during rendering.

The card again will not work with this computer which may be in next years budget
