Looking for good mic to use indoors better than octava

i've been using the octava for some time now and it's cool, but i'm wanting a mic now that's great for indoors that i do not have to be so close to my actors as they speak in order to get good audio.

i mostly do narrative films where 2 or 3 people are speaking at a time. i'm not concerend about price at this moment since i wont be buying it immediately and whatever it is i'm willing to save up or put it on my card and pay it off later.

any suggestions?

There are a lot out there. Here's just a few to look into to get you started...

Sennheiser - MKH416, MKH40 (I have one - love it), MKH50

Schoeps CMC641

Neumann KM 185DSS

regardless of the mic, the reason you get close is to increase signal to noise ratio, so that background is minimized. the farther back you are, the more noise, laws of physics.

I agree, further than 18 inches and you loose lots of signal: it exponentially drops off. You might need multiple mics with a few boom ops or include lavs while continuing to mic from above. The Schoeps CMC641 is the Gold Standard and the Sanken CS3e is the Gold Std. for Shotguns. If you really want some distance and you don't use lavs then the only real distant mic I know of are the type in a parabolic disc. Looks like a small satellite dish. I don't see them being used too often, that must be telling, but they would work for gathering reference tracks for later ADR.

It's called the Inverse Square Law. In simple terms, this means that a sound twice as far away is only one-fourth as loud. A sound four times as far away is only one-sixteenth as loud. So a human voice that records with adequate volume three feet away is just one-sixteenth as effective at twelve feet.
