looking for good BUS POWERED ext hard drive

i read the 'FAQ' above about external hard drives, but that was mostly about drives with a power adapter.

i'll be traveling internationally, (and want to buy bus powered hard drives as a result) to run off of my powerbook 15" 1.25 ghz with FW 800.

it sounds like the bus powered USB drives out there (some of which are sub $100 for 160gb) can't be dependably powered by the powerbook? any experience with this?

as a result, i'm looking mostly at the orange Lacie 'rugged' drives which can be powered by FW 800 as well, which people are saying is more dependable.

any thoughts? advice?

I would look at g-technology. I just traveled with a g-drive mini to back up photography stills (I still shoot video on tape Xh-A1), I went to three countries and had no problems. there stuff is a little pricey, but for the mac user, there is nothing better.

I have used the LaCie Rugged (I own one, the 100GB 7200RPM). It is very quick, and mounts right when I plug it in, but for the rugged factor, its not great, just with casual use (in a camera case and backpack) its not held up pretty well. The case is all dented, and the metal seal on the side is broken. I have needed to duct tape it to keep it together.

I've got three of the LaCie Rugged Drives, and they've taken a good beating but still work perfectly.

Honestly, they're the only LaCie product I'll use anymore. I just haven't had good experiences with their larger drives.

I can also vouch for the LaCie rugged drive. I use the 250GB drive, and it works great via FW800 with my MBP. It's rugged enough for me, but I keep it in my padded camera backpack.

Like mine has been good, I've just not found it as rugged as it is advertised to be, like 4 ft drops. Ive only dropped mine 1-2 feet and its falling apart..
