Looking for a VTR?

I would like to minimize "wear and tear" on my transport/heads. I suppose this means I need to purchase a VTR ... I would really like to hear how others are doing this.

Since I am a NewBee, I don't really know what kind of functionality I am looking for ( except to capture the video onto my PC ). Would it be best for me to just purchase a cheap, panasonic, consumer, cam and use it? Is there a cheap ( under $1,000 ) Panasonic, VTR that will work reasonably well?

What are advantages/Disadvantages?

Many Thanks !!

Re: Looking for a VTR?

Hello, Many people do purchase cheap single chip cameras (like the PV-DV53) and use them as a transport deck for the NLE. And the cam doubles as a 2nd unit camera for doing documentary, "making-of" footage and dangerous shots you would never use your DVX for. The added bonus is these cameras include another charger and an additional (although undersized) battery. Great. I basically did this for a while with my PV-DV953 (a 3-CCD but consumer grade unit) Then I bought a JVC SR-VS30U. it is a combo miniDV / SVHS deck. The only P.I.T.A. with this unit is that the 1394 port is on the front of the unit - I guess they figured people would plug in their camcorder there and dub mini DV's or dub to SVHS. Since I'm going to the NLE it would have been nicer if the jack had been on the back, but I understand why it is where it is. It's an excellent solution otherwise and is very versitile, but it does run about $800. The transport is very smooth and responsive. I'd say much better than a $300 camera. But weigh your options and your budget.
