Looking for a Tripod

I am in search of a tripod that costs in the range of $100-$200. Basically what I'm looking for is something with a smooth head and an alright height. I've never bought a tripod before so I don't know what would be best. Any advice is welcome and I appreciate your comments.

At that price range you'll have to look for a used one, and even then I'm not sure if you're be able to find any for less than $250. You want at a minimum a Bogen 501 (or 503) head. A starting tripod stick is the 3046. Brand new the combo would cost you $400-500 and a used one would go in the $300 range.

yeah, you need more dough to buy a tripod. from what ive read it depends on your camera... but the 503 bogen is your best bet. thats what ive read.. i just got a cartoni action pro and i love it. later

would anyone know if all Libec tripods have the fluid Head in it for smooth panning and tilting?

Whats a good tripod for about $400-$500?

bogen 503/351 package, it can't be beat in that price range......

I'm using a Libec Th650dv tripod. its light and cheap and sets up easy. it has also a 65mm ball. Can't complain about the price.

i gotta agree with yanker... in the 400-500 price range, it is all about the bogen 503 head with 351legs. i bought the combo a few months ago and it is very good. much much better than the 501.

Thank you for the input. I would like to hold out for the Bogen but I need it before next weekend and I just don't have the money. Thanks for the advice though.

Try finding someone in your unlisted area, and see if you can't borrow/rent their tripod. You get to try out the rig before buying one.

Look @ the Sunpack VideoPro M (B&H Photo Sunpack 620800) w/true fluid head & supports 15.4 lbs. $150 w/lifetime warranty.

True fluid heads

True fluid heads

But aren't the 503s as cheap as you can get for true-fluid heads? Even the 501s aren't true fluid, right?

With our budgets, we're pretty much stuck to having to settle for non-true fluid heads (quality heads, just not true fluid). The cheapest, assuming they are 503 bogens, even if bought Used, are prob. still out of our price range. Don't see point of complaining about something being non-fluid if that's what we're stuck with -- again, even the popular 501's aren't true fluid.
