Looking for a talkback option

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Rolls PM55 so tat my boom op can monitor the audio from the boom. It works great and is much easier to manage than running a cable back from the mixer but the only drawback is that I've lost the ability to talk to him through his headphones. FYI the PM55 has a separate monitor input. Of course I could use a set of Comteks but that would be overkill for basic communication purposes.

Instead I was thinking of using a set of walkie talkies. I know most of them have a headphone output that I could plug into the monitor input of the PM55. On my end the ideal solution would be to be able to plug a lavalier microphone that I would clip somewhere close to my mouth, that way I could even whisper instructions/warnings during takes.

Has anybody experimented with such a configuration, and if yes which way did you go? And are there any inexpensive (preferably less than $50) walkie talkie sets with a microphone input? Assuming I get one with a microphone input, would the transmission quality be good enough for a quiet whisper to be heard clearly by the boom op?

Thank you!

Alexis
