Looking For a Good Server to Post Videos...Not YouTube!

I used to post rough cuts of scenes from my film in progress "Unlisted" to YouTube...that is until they started claiming that any such posts were also giving them license to do what they wished with your work. Really disappointed...just goes to show you that there's no such thing as a free lunch...always knew this venue was too good to be true for a filmmaker trying to keep his cast/crew involved at no cost. Sounds like an American version of the Chinese pirating of our intellectual properties. What happened to the Google (who owns YouTube) that seemed to be so cool?

For the lack of talent on staff, they're ripping off an unassuming creative (admittedly, some not so creative) public just wanting to share what they're doing. In my case I only shared a single legitimate, high production value short film as "listed," (from which I've never made a cent, and never charged them a cent). Bummer! I'm sure they make a bundle off the ads they screen, and from the paid posters under actual legal contract.

If I really said what I thought of this practice I might be kicked off this forum.

Looking for suggestions for a new (paid, and secure, and not so expensive a low/no budget filmmaker can't afford it) server where I might do the same, without worrying that someone like Google was looking for profit from work they hadn't created. Now they're ripping off copyrights (they call it license) from videographers/filmmakers rather than the posters being accused of doing the ripping off of someone else's work.

Of course this is my opinion and experience, and disappointment with an outfit I formerly admired.

Blip.tv is probably one of the best places. Before your video there is an ad that will generate you $$ when people click on it when watching your video.

I really like Vimeo, use it all the time, and cannot recommend the paid account enough. It's $59.99 for the year, which may seem pricey to some, but I have paid for the last two years and have no regretted it for a single moment.

EDIT: You in no way are required to have a paid account however. It is worth it if you do a lot of uploading to the service though.

I read the Vimeo fine print (just before they got my $59), they also consider they have license to your posted videos...though I'm not certain how that plays out if they are posted as "private"...and this is true even if you pay for an account.

Think I'll keep looking. I want a server that will protect my rights to my creation, not one that believes they can profit from my creations even though they're charging me a fee. Another Bummer!

Some of the guys around here started using something called...lightbox, light table? that's not right, but maybe someone else remembers. It's purely professional hosting, I think, which means you pay, but there are no shennigans. It's meant for pros to host and control access to their work...sorry I forget the name. Jack used it.

Maybe Brightcove also. Though they are mainly for serving up video on a larger scale...

Remember on the Internet, the rule is: If the service is free, you are not the customer, you are the product.

Brightcove I checked just now, $99/month...too much for me at the moment, but hope I can find something as professional with the filmmaker funding his currently non-commercial work out of his own pocket in mind.

Thanks,

Carey
