Looking for a "G5-like" PC...

The reason...G5s (or whatever the latest Macs are called) are too expensive. So I'm not looking to break the bank with a PC of equal capabilities, but I'd settle for something that's nearly as powerful as a G5, and would let me edit uncompressed HD (I do a fair bit of motion graphics too)
Affordability is a high priority.

Get the best Mac you can afford. An Imac can be quite a good editor if you treat it right.

Dont spend lots of money on a PC, get a proper mac system if you are doing proper video work....

What editing system are you using? You can buy a refurbished Dell or HP for a lot less than a new PC or Mac.

And you don't need a Mac to do "proper video work". That's a myth that still persists to this day. Choose the operating system you like best and buy as much machine as you can afford to run it.

Michael.

a nice imac will be fine to start with. we used imacs at my old work, cut hd footage all day long with no issues, a little slow in after effects, but still not too bad for the price.

I love that post - 'get a Mac to do proper video work' - hell with sentiment like that I should just pack up my PC based After Effects machine and put it in the bin - after all I don't want to be seen as sub-standard or something - LOL :)

Back to the real world....

You can get one hell of a PC based system for a very good price - and if you know how to use a screw driver you could even do it yourself and shave off even more...

Take this motherboard:-

Put in two Xeon E5430 Quad Core 2.66GHz CPU's and 4GB memory and you would have the basis for one hell of a machine....

you say Tomato I say TomAHto. you can do great things on both. I prefer Macs but I have monster PC that works great too.

It may be close in cost to build a Monstrosity PC that Rivals a Quad G5 anyway. Look into it closely and decide which route you want to take. Both offer great choices. and you can edit just fine on both.

Filthrich - You actualy got me to thinking about what the price diff would be between a Mac Pro and a PC - so I spent a few minutes on the web.

I came up with this:

PC

Tempest i5100X Motherboard - $326.69
2 x Intel Xeon E5440 Harpertown 2.83GHz Quad core CPU - $1430
4 x Corsair 1GB DDR2 FB-DIMM ECC Fully buffered - $211.96
320GB Hard Drive - $65.99
ATI HD4850 Video card - $199
DVD DL (RW+- etc etc) - $40
Lian Li PC Case (Nice looking) - 149.00
Corsair 750W Power Supply - 129.99

Total $2553.63

MAC PRO

The same spec as the above with 4GB memory but with a much older ATI video card

Total $3449

(Both without any software)

So you can save $895.37 going for the DIY PC - or - you can throw in a copy of Premiere Pro and Windows XP and be at about the same price as the MAC Pro

**NOTE TO APPLE FANS - THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BE AN ATTACK ON THE MAC PRO - ITS JUST A SMALL EXAMPLE I WORKED THROUGH TO SEE WHAT THE CURRENT PRICE DIFF IS BETWEEN A MAC PRO AND A DIY PC**

A Mac Pro and a G5 are not the same thing.

I just (like several hours ago) built up quad core Vista machine w/ 4 gigs of ram and a 8800GT. Everything including HDDs and a case and PSU came in at under $1000. I already had a copy of Vista on hand though.

There also is no reason you cannot build a computer like this and then put OSX on it and basically be running a mac for a lot less. A similarly configured Mac Pro to my setup is around $2700.

Care to give us more info as to all the different parts and where you ordered from? I'm looking to get myself a better machine and will build it if need be.

I know this is silly question. but Why don't they let us build Macs like we can PC's?
