Hi Mike, Hi Everyone.
I just wanted to weigh in on the 'my35' - Mike's adapter. I'm really happy with the great job he's done. The footage I've been getting is fantastic. I've been using a 50mm Nikon lens and a 105mm Nikon at 1.4 and 2.5 respectively... anyway, it is definitely worth the price and wait.
Good job Mike...
The drawbacks are it's a ***** to keep clean, at least it is for me... and, you can see the grain at f4 and beyond..so you gotta get fast lenses.
All of you who are on your way to getting one of these - expect to be very happy.
As far as light loss goes, I think Mike determined it to be in the stop to stop and a half range.
Also - I'd like to post some grabs, but I don't know exactly how... I very new to the message board thing. Just take me through the steps and I'll give you some grabs.
The My35 will always be a bit soft, but I found by tweaking the macro between 00 to 04 then I can focus on anything. And, there are still moments of chromatic abberation (color halos), but with the lenses (Nikkor) I'm using and a good exposure that is kept to a pretty much unoticable minimum.
I've been viewing my footage on a variety of monitors and I'm very happy with the 'public output' with this adapter. It is definately acceptable for small monitor work... the reactions I've been getting are very good.
In short, you can go a very long way.. (but not all the way!) with Mike's adapter.
I think that if you want to take your cinematography to another level without spending over 500 dollars, you will be very happy with this product.
I actually have mike's proto type. It's a bit darker - cuts about 3 stops. Which makes it a real pain indoors.
But outdoor footage has been great. Again, a tad soft I feel. But cool. I think I might try different glass in it to see if I can get those two stops back.
As far as Cromatic aberation. It hasn't been an issue for me so far.
Tried to view Rook's footage, but it's down now. Anyone have any clips/frame grabs available to view? I've purchased the Letus35, which I've been VERY pleased with, but it's no where near as sexy looking as Mike Dawson's set up. Then again, results are the only thing in the long run that matter, so I'd love to see some clips/grabs.
One thing I DO love about the Letus35, is that it's got a Canon/Nikon switchable mount. With the My35, does it also have that option, or are you stuck with only one lens choice (not a bad thing, all the other adapters seem to be that way)?
Mike, what's the deal with putting a video on putfile? Any special requirements? Mine is 2mb quicktime7,h.264...24p .. I've tried it three times and it refuses to upload.
I've got some good dolly to focus work to show everybody...
I encoded my clip as an mp4, now it uploads. The original frame size is 720by360, so the standard mp4 sizing has it stretched out a bit, but, whatever, you can still get the idea.
I used a plywood/PVC dolly that I've made...it actually looks a wee bit shaky at 105mm but I don't mind yet, 'cause the images I've been getting have a nice feel.
enjoy. Can't say enough good things about the my35.
