I tried this out last weekend, sweet! A great little recorder.  much better than the minidisc, which always made me a bit nervous.

it encodes .mp3 in the hard drive.

If you are on Mac OS, it works wonderfully with it. shows up as a drive itself, halellujah!

Read the specs carefully, and you will see this is quite nice.

Re: LOOK at the iRiver

PH--can you set the compression rate for the MP3 encoding.  I'd sure be nervous relying on one of these units to do double sound--I've heard some horror stories, but I'm sure these things are getting better.  Can you encode VBR?  I'd still use a mixer with a feed to the DVX and one to the iRiver.

Re: LOOK at the iRiver

Yes, you can set the bitrate for .mp3

It also has several codecs..wav,.wma, etc.
wav 11/22/44/48KHz, 16 bit mono/stereo
line in/out
External mic input
internal mic

i believe you can download the manual/specs on the support part of their website.

holy smokes, you can even put video/text...what not on it. its is portable DRIVE and will give ipod a little competition

like an ipod that records, but at cheaper. You might find other versions with smaller storage space. I got this at Best Buy. It was a store return, so I got a discount. $297 US. Somebody allegedly bought it and returned it for an ipod. They "left' me with 1000 songs!!

Like anything you must practice recording and the controls, etc before a gig, but the controls/buttons are so, so much better than Sony Minidisc.

It saves loads of time also. Using the mac platform and minidisc, I had to do real-time capture into Sound Studio, to get an aif.

Now, its just drag and drop-yipee!

And for the absent minded, its a nice little voice recorder.

The quality of the audio is NICE.

WOW... really nice. Anyone have any practice with this thing? I'm curious. But it is new so will have to wait on wear and durability etc. But still very nice features.
