Longevity of SMPTE-C broadcast monitors...

Hi,

I've learned a great deal from this forum about the specifications desired in a broadcast monitor for studio/field work: blue-only, underscan, 6500K color temperature, 540+ lines of resolution, and SMPTE-C phosphors.

However, amidst all the postings about the benefits of SMPTE-C phosphors over P22 for accurate color rendition, I spotted one that mentioned the exceptionally short lifespan of the SMPTE-C phosphors---as low as 100 hours of usage---before they lose their color accuracy.

I'd like more information about this, if possible. It seems almost impossible to believe that broadcasters would either 1.) tolerate this loss of accuracy so soon 2.) budget for constant replacements of very expensive equipment.

I have no issue with digging deep for the money to get good gear, but it's one thing to spend $1000+ on something you imagine using for years, and another to spend it on something you'll only get 100 hours on.

Looking forward to hearing from the experts.

Thanks,
Daniel
