LONGEST FIREWIRE CABLE

I am looking for a longer firewire (4pin to 4pin) cable for on location use. For our production we decided to use a laptop with DV RACK as a field monitor and for capturing.
1. Can anyone suggest which is the safest one to go for (sice there are lot in the market to choose from)
2. Will there be a data loss or noice in picture because of the extra length?
3. Since it is used on location what are the problems to look out for?
4. What is the best way to store them? (I heard people saying one should store these with out rolling up)

The one I shortlisted is CC1394-44-25-G - 25' FT Gold 4-pin 1394 to 4-pin 1394 from www.sanmax.com
(note: I am trying to buy it through a friend in US since in india it is not availabe of the shelf. I really dont want to take chances since some one else is buying for me from another part of the world and it cost money)

Re: LONGEST FIREWIRE CABLE

Be aware that the IEEE1394 specification calls for an absolute maximum cable length of 4.5 meters (about 14.5 feet, I think).

Any longer than that, and it could get a bit risky.

With that said, I've got a 30' from Laird, and it works great. I use it specifically with DV Rack and have no complaints. Apparently they can make them as long as 75'. I don't know how they do it, since the spec says 4.5 meters is the max, but I can vouch for the Laird 30' as working well.

Re: LONGEST FIREWIRE CABLE

Markertek offers a Laird firewire repeater box, LTM-FDR. The ad claims 225 foot firewire, and its available for $75. I have never used it tho, but its out there.

Re: LONGEST FIREWIRE CABLE

I just got two 15 foot 4pin to 4pin for $4.99 each from an Ebay retailer.
Let me know if you want the info.

Longer cables exist, but as Barry says, a bit risky.
