Long Shotguns

Anyone have any experience with long shotgun mics? I've been using the Sennheiser 416 and love it, but lately most of my interviews have been in really crowded locations with lots of noise coming in from all directions, there's no way around this, so I have decided to get a long shotgun mic, I'll throw down if necessary, but if I can save an extra 800 or so and still get better audio than my 416 I would be a happy camper.

Here's what I have to choose from: Leaning towards choice #2 (please let me know if I'm making a mistake :)

How long?

The Sennheiser MKH 8070 is good - about the same directivity as the old MKH 816.

The MKH 70 is also good (more directional than the 416, but less than the 816 / 8070).

The K6+ME67 is about the same directivity as the MKH 70, but cheaper.

The Schoeps SuperCMIT is also good.

For reference - the MKH 8060 replaces the 416 (though the 416 will continue while there is demand).

So I went with the Beyerdynamic, I got a good deal on it, I'll do a test once I get it, really interested on how well a long shotgun will perform compared to my 416.

I'll assume you talking 'exteriors'. Sorry to say, you may be a little disappointed as the difference between a long and short shotgun will not be night and day. Though I've read some of the new digital shotguns are amazing minimizing extraneous sound.
I have an AT4071 long SG and hardy ever used it. I'd let that go for $500. ($1000 new)

Owning quite a few shotguns over the years I've found that the Sanken CS3e has almost the same reach as my 816 (which I havent gotten out of the case in years),
with the added benefits of being able to use it indoors, low ceilings, etc.
I completely agree with Rick when he says you'll be disappointed if you believe its going to be a night and day difference.

I dont really expect night and day, but I do expect an improvement, I guess we will see.
