Long Lens for DVX

Hi,
I'm going to be shooting some surfing footage from the beach and want to have a really long lens (something like a 16mm equivalent of 500mm)
What are the options for making the DVX lens longer? I've seen 2X converters and stuff but I want a LOT of length, the more the better, I want to get really tight on the surfers.
Any ideas or know of any add on lenses??
thanks,
Bryant

Re: Long Lens for DVX

some one correct me if I am wrong but 2X the 35mm equivalent focal length of the DVX would be pretty long. I can't be bothered going and checking what the 35mm equivalent for the camera is now 'cause i've got to go to work but I'm pretty sure it somewhere around the 30ish to 300ish so 2X would be 600ish. :)

Re: Long Lens for DVX

Yes, but first of all there aren't any decent 2x teleconverters yet, and secondly, that'd be 650mm in 35mm terms, so it'd still be way short of what bryant's requesting, which would be to match 500mm on a 16mm camera. That'd be more like 1000mm on a 35mm movie camera, or around 1500mm on a 35mm still camera.

So you'd need a 6x tele converter to get in the ballpark. And the DVX doesn't even offer a 2x yet.

Oleg probably said it best: an XL-1s with the EOS adapter and a 500mm Canon EOS lens would probably get you what you want. The DVX is not a telephoto camera.

of course! i forgot to make the 16mm to 35mm conversion :-[
are there plans for a 2x lens?

Re: Long Lens for DVX

I spoke to Century about the potential of a 2x but they said they won't be making one. Mainly because the size would be huge and the lens would weigh about the same as the camera, not to mention the cost would be sky high...

still cannon have some benefits
the other way is p+s technics with the dvx but it also not so practical for cheap[ solution

Re: Long Lens for DVX

ok, thanks guys, I guess I'll have to try out the 1.6X and if it's not enough I'll use a bolex from the beach (was hoping to avoid that for cost, but I do like the slow motion)

now as for the in the water angle :) anyone know of a good (cheap) water housing? I've seen these Ewa marine ones that are like a plastic bag:

but I'm skeptical of their water tightness in heavy surf - any one with experience?

Re: Long Lens for DVX

I used Ewa Marine bags for still photography cameras in the past, mostly with good results. But keep an eye on the seams and keep the bag away from sun-lotion or other fluids that may react chemically with the material.
I stopped using the Ewa Marines because its very hard to operate controls on the camera.
