Long Distance Workflow - Error reconnecting files...

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to deal with a workflow where my editor is 8,000 miles from me, wherein I can view project files to save the export/compress/upload/download time.

I am on FCP UB, he is on FCP 4.5HD (maybe FCP5). All the media files are identical now on both of our drives, though they may be in different folders. I understand that with different versions of FCP, I am not going to be sending him changes within FCP. That's okay for now.

I take his project file, open it up, accept the update to the new version of FCP and then try to reconnect files. Despite the fact that all the files seem to connect fine and that they appear fine in the sequences (and in Viewer), I have not actually watched the sequences all the way through yet. And after the first connection of media, the following "error" message occurred:

"Some of the attributes of one or more of the files that you have chosen do not match the attributes of the original. This may cause problems within the sequences that are dependent on them. The attributes that differed are as follows:

- Number of audio or video tracks

Would you like to try to reconnect again? [Buttons for Continue and Try Again]"

Does anyone know what problems - if any - to expect from this message and how to avoid it?

Best,

Joshua

That's a weird one if you mirrored the media files in both locations. Any chance you turned on the "digitize video and audio to seperate files" option in user settings? That would be the only place the media files would go off I would think. As for the sequences, perhaps it just a hiccup in the "update project file" process? I've never encountered such any time I've had to update, so little surprised there. Maybe right after import, while everything seems to be happy, do a file save as, and save it out as a fresh FCP 5.1.x (UB) project file, and work from that (kind of like a "fresh" project file). Or even copy and paste the contents from his into a fresh project file.

Another option is that you could have him send you an XML file instead of the project file. Trying using that to rebuild the edits. Also, you can then turn around and export an XML of your own and he can import it and see your changes. Just make sure to use XML 2 (I think, you'll want to confirm) as I believe 5.1.x has XML 3 but 4.5 does not.

cheers.

Yeah, I've browsed now through two of the sequences and so far not noticed any problems so it may be a non-issue. I will look into this XML thing in general; thanks for the tip, and I may resave the project file just as a precaution.

Thanks!
