What file format should a logo be in if it's going to be layered over a black background? Jpg. Psd.?

Also, how do i get rid of the white background on which the logo is layered over??

Thanks man,

does anything have to be done with respect to the alpha channel?? If i wanted to put it over video and have the open spaces of the logo transparent is the channel supposed to be set as alpha?

Hi,

PSD (Photoshop Document) formats carry an "alpha" automatically in Premiere and a lot of other NLEs. So does PNG (Portable Network Graphic) and Targa (Targa Format) formats.

PSD is native to Adobe and more convenient, but PNG might carry a tad more conventionality to it. Browsers support it, too.

One of the more confusing things about Photoshop is that it tends to default to a white background, which suggests how all images should be created.

In Photoshop use the magic wand tool to select and delete the white area. You should now see the transparency behind €the logo if you do this properly.

Create a new layer from the logo . Save it as a PSD and import it to Premiere.

Tip : bone up a bit on Photoshop and layers.

well the thing is, I have a graphic designer creating the logo for me....so she has to deliver it to me in a format which allows me to get rid of the back ground.....so what can i tell her?

so what do i do then?

You might double click the layer in the Layer Pallet first. That will bring up the layer properties, allowing you to rename the layer from Background to something else (important depending on the version of Photoshop), and make the background transparent.

Then you can select pixels with the wand and delete them.

Here's what I found....

"Ask your designer to save it as a png or tiff, better yet as a psd. These formats carry transparancy (alpha channel). Then you need not to key out the background in Premiere. "

Tell her you need the logo on a transparent background, file format: Photoshop.

Hi,

I'd ask her for a PNG file of the logo with a transparent background, if you want to have a quid pro quo size for your project.

That ought to be clear enough.

But since she is a designer... I'd work in her vector space.

An AI (Adobe Illustrator) file would be fine, likely an EPS (Encapsulated Postscript) file would work, too... Assuming that she is working in that space.

Premiere CS3 is familiar with either of those formats, and either would be scalable, too, giving you more choices down stream in your work, as both are vector graphics.

The AI work would also fit into hash marks 4:3 or 16:9 - your call, for exact fitting into the project, too, assuming you have Illustrator, or you can ask her, assuming she has it, to make an exact match for the project.

thanks everyone....I'll probably just get a psd. and AI file just to give me some options, since it seems everyone has a different opinion on this topic as to what is the best way to do it.

The opinions dont differ that much at all.

She only needs to know that you need the logo with a transparent bg (alpha channel) and as a professional , she should know how to do that. In fact you should learn how to do that with whatever she supplies. Its a regular requirement that comes up often for editors.

BTW - tell her you need it RGB (not CMYK)
