logging fear

hey there--

i was logging doing capture now...and all is good...after each clip is done i simply type the name of the clip while it sits in the bin...(it would go in as untitled1 , untitled2 etc.)

but now i just noticed in the capture scratch folders that none of the clips have their new name!!...its all untitleds..

my fear is that when i go to move these clips to a diff computer for ediiting --( this is a big project with people working on diff computers)--that the named clip in a bin wont be able to reconnect up with the untitleds..

i tried changing the name of the clip in capture scratch to match the name in the bin...but then i was told that "untitled48" is missing.....please help!

Don't panic, if you've caught on this early its not a big deal. Also, it won't take too long to deal with. What has happened should happen and is what would expect based upon what you did.

One way to do it (slow, but will keep things connected properly) is to go into FCP, right click on the file, and click on "Reveal in Finder." Now when it shows you the linked file "Untitled 001, etc.) rename it in Finder. Then when you back to FCP it will say media offline. Don't worry about it, move on, and do the same with the next file. Keep going until you've done this for all the files and everything has gone offline.

Now highlight all the offline files, right click on them, and select Reconnect Media. Now the reconnect media window will popup. Hit the locate button. When the next window appears, search through your drives to the location where all the media is (the capture scratch). Uncheck the "Matched Name Only" option. Then find and select the filename that FCP is trying to reconnect. Go through the list. Hit save and you're good to go.

One alternate option, if you didn't use any log notes for this process you can do it even quicker. Rename all the files in the capture scratch. Delete the files/media in FCP. Then re-import it all with the new names. However, only do this if you haven't cut anything yet (as it will fubar assocations to sequences if you have any).

cheers.

amazing how quick people are on this thread...steve nash has nothing on you folks! thanks so much varicam...i will try it....one q, tho, when i do the reconnect i can have it do so with ALL the clips at once , rite? like how it usually does on a reconnect (grabbing them all and dumping them into that lower box)--i wont have to do each clip one at a time rite?---thx again

Normally, yes you can reconnect all media at once. In this scenario though, no you cannot. The reason being is that, if the names are all the same still, at it sees that first name, it just runs down the list matching all the names. But in this case, you are changing the name, so it is unlikely to do that for you (I've had a few oddities where it has done it for me, but that's been quite the rare case and never could figure out why it played so nice).

This is certainly a good example of why that no matter what kind of rush you might be under, it will always be wiser to log things as detailed and properly as you can the first time through. Fixing it afterwards may not be impossible, but it will be more work then you might guess. Good luck.

cheers.

If you're just logging (and haven't done any editing yet), I'd just highlight all the "media offline" clips and press delete. Then go find all your newly named clips, and drag and drop them into FCP. No need to reconnect really (unless you HAVE done some editing on them)...

Yes, you can do it by deleting and re-importing but that's too much work. I'm not sure about other versions of FCP but in FCP6 all you have to do is select the clip or clips that you created names for in the browser, than go to 'modify' than 'rename' than 'file to match clip'. When you go into the finder, it will show what you named the file in FCP is now the name of the clip in the Finder.
