Log and Capture Problems, DVX100B and FCS 3.0 (FCP 7.0.3)

I found some good posts about this kind of issue, but they didn't answer my specifc issue, so here it goes:

OK, so, I made a tape of several "takes" done in 25pa and when I went to log and capture in FCP the tape worked just fine. I had one power down (of the camera) between several takes but everything imported correctly.

I did a second import on another tape (also in 24pa) with multiple shots and several power downs in the process, and again the tape imported correctly with some slightly revised capture settings, in fact it looked 100% better than the 1st tape I captured.

(Now my problem)

So yesterday I decided I was going to shoot some 60i and 30p footage and try and adjust it on the 24ap timeline (slow motion trick from Barry Green's DVX book) and get some slow motion shots. I recorded several 2 minute clips at 60i then at 30p, then switched back to 24ap. There were several power shut offs between takes (turning camera off to save power).

Now, when i go to "log and capture" the tape, FCP only recognizes the timecode break between the first clip and the second (both shot at 60i) but then records everything from the beginning of the second clip onward as one huge movie file with no time code breaks.

I think I know what the problem is, but need I need some confirmation:

Is FCP is too stupid to know when to switch capture formats between different types of clips?

if that's true, that's OK. I can shoot with different formats on different tapes but with Premiere you don't have to do that. AP just picks up the type of shot (24fps or 29.97fps) and logs the clip accordingly. Unfortunately AP doesn't seem to know about 2:3:3:2 pulldown so the clips like like crap.

OR:

Is there a way to import clips of varying types of shooting (60i, 30p and 24ap) in FCP that I don't know about yet?

Any help appreciated.

Log and capture those shots separately- not all as one big gulp. 60i and 30p are both treating as 29.97 DV normal- only 24pA needs to be treated specially.

Makes a lot of sense. Sounds like FCP is using 2 (er... 3?) different types of capture and they don't play nice with each other on the same tape.

I'm going to shoot a few shots of each type on 3 sepaerate tapes and see if I get better results. Better to learn now than mess up the shoot later.

Thanks again!

well no- it doesn't like to switch frame rates mid capture. Capture one clip at a time when you have different frame rates on the same tape and you won't have any trouble. And yes- splitting into different tapes would simplify somewhat- although you'll get more timecode breaks which is worse.

Wrong firewire capture preset?

That's actually my problem, Noah. I DID capture one clip at a time and I AM having troubles capturing and logging. I used:

- Brand new tape (as always)
- One recording run before capture (Only rewound once to capture via firewire).

In fact, FCP doesn't seem to be able to control my DVX100b camera "fully" via firewire either. I can't just hit the capture now and have it run. I have to get up and manually start the DVX100B with the "play" button. That makes me wonder if I have the right firewire settings in FCP...

In Premiere (which I don't want to use) you just hit the capture and it starts the camera automatically, logs and captures the clips, and when it's done, it's done.

I noticed that there are a ton of options for choosing a firewire device, including two Panasonic presets... I think they are like Pansonic 232 and 234 or something.

Is there a "best" setting for firewire in FCP to work with the DVX100B? I probably don't have my firewire set up correctly...

Thanks again! =)

OMG, I am such a noob. Sorry to take up your time!

All I had to do was capture the whole tape, and then hit Mark\ DV Start/Stop from the menu, Done.

All the clips broken into individual segments, drag the segments to the timeline and you are ready to edit.

Although that didn't resolve the tape issue. I think it's best to keep 24ap and 60i on different tapes because they use different capture presets, but my main issue is solved.
