I have a shoot with several people that I want to mic. The issue is that it will be outside on a boat in probably windy conditions. I am shooting with the HVX and while I could use the 2 XLR inputs on the camera , i am thinking of getting the Edirol R-44 recorder.

I figure this way I will have 4 extra inputs to use for several wireless mics. What do you you all think? Would this be better then just a portable mixer?

Not a bad idea. And yeah, I'd say it IS better to have each mic isolated than mixing down multiple mics to 2 channels. Are the subjects fishing by any chance?

.

I have used the R44 to even record live music, and having the ability to not only plug more inputs in, but to individually mix them on the fly is great. It's an amazing recorder, and versatile for many different projects. Basically, the more options you have for your audio, the better, right?
