Location Audio

What percentage of your location audio do you guys think you actually use?

Is filtering considered a good fix for some shots?

Is the omni camera mic good for any serious (or at least useable) audio?

There is not set percentage for usable audio in a film. Completely depends on the type of film, condition under which it is filmed, attitude of the production towards sound, budgetary concerns, etc.

What do you mean by filtering? Noise removal in small doses is quite standard. Trying to remove that Harley driving by...no.

IMHO, the on-camera mic is good for adding extra dead weight to the cameraman's shoulders. It is simply too far from the subject and too close to camera noise. People have tried time and time again to get good audio with an on camera mic, never works. If you insist on trying yourself then practice at home before you attempt it with something serious.

There is no set percentage. It depends on how good your production sound is.

What kind of filtering? Different filters and eq do different things. You have to know what filters do what before you know to use them.

The on board camera mic is good for one thing. Nothing.
