"Locating Timecode Break"

I am still figuring out how to capture in FCP. I used the Capture Now option and captured about 35 minutes of footage. At the end, it said "Locating Timecode Break" and started toggling around. I finally hit escape and watched the footage. It looks fine i think, but I'm concerned that there may be something wrong with my camera. Or could it be that I'm doing something wrong while capturing?
Thanks.

there's nothing wrong with the camera... when the video runs out on the tape, so does the timecode. FCP tries to keep looking for something that isn't there. You can avoid this by setting In and Out points for your capture.

okay, thanks. The only thing is, I hit stop on my deck/camera - it didn't run out, at least I don't think it did.

You could have had a glitch in the tape that broke the timecode. Or you might have been recording, turned off the camera for a bit, then turned it on again, causing a slight timecode break. Not to worry. Anything you recorded up until then will be fine. in the future, in user preferences, there is a box for "on timecode break". Switch it to warn after capture or abort instead of make new clip. if you use warn after, there is the possibilty what's recorded after will go out of sync. Also, if you prestripe your tape with timecode you won't have any breaks. Just let it record something for the full hour, rewind to the top and you're ready to go.

One other thing to check is if you are chaining FW400 HDDs together with the Camera. Firewire is a 'chatty' protocol and too many devices daisy chained or in the wrong order have been known to cause FCP's Capture to malfunction.

One other thing, blando3, Capture Now is the worst possible way to capture footage. The best procedure is to ALWAYS set and in and out point (even if capturing the whole tape), then use capture clip or batch capture. See Larry Jordan's website for more info on this.
