Loading Time - Images

I'm creating a site for my company website, but the loading time is differing for various people. Obviously one aspect is there Broadband / Speed amount. Makes a difference if you're on Dial Up. Though some people with fast internet says it takes ages to load the images.

The main background is the image. So it was 6.9mb, I changed it from .png to .jpg. now it's around 750kb but still taking ages.

Any ideas?
 
Is the background image a repeating graphic or one large photo? In either case, that jpg size is far too big.

JPG's allow for different compression ratios. Try saving it with different percentages of compression until you can get the file as small as possible while still liking the image quality.
 
do you have PhotoShop? if so, you also have ImageReady. Use it to optimize your graphics. you should be able to crunch it down quite a bit without noticeable quality loss.
