Loading/Importing a VOB file?

Hey All,

I've been given a DVD that someone needs to me render out in a different format. I got the VOB file off the disc, but when I load this 250 MB file into Vegas it shows up as only 14 seconds long with about 1/2 of it silent and black at the beginning. Is there a perscribed way of getting these into Vegas? Here's been my technique over the years: Copy the VOB file to my local HD, and then change the file extension to .mpg. Then just load it into Vegas. Unfortunately, this is not working on this disc. Any suggestions?

The file plays fine in PowerDVD, and it's a DVD from a client so it's not a commercially produced DVD. It is possible that they have some basic copy protection on it. Maybe that's the problem.

Mark,

What version of Vegas are you running? From 7 on (maybe 6 on...) there's an "import DVD disc" function, designed for DVD camcorders but works really well, renames the file for you too upon import so Vegas doesn't read it as "vob"

if this doesn't work, PM me - I may have another solution for you

Hmmmm, This happens time and time again. DVD and Vob files basically being delivery format types. They arent really ideal to edit with. But heres the 100% surefire way to workaround this. The problems you are facing are typical of a scrambled file due to copy protection. So use one of those dvd rippers which can rip and convert to avi. This is your best bet. Also if your ripper cant convert to avi. You can still rip to a dvd format. As if you were tryng to create one more dvd. But the difference is that any region coding or encryption would have been removed by the ripper. So the resulting dvd ready folder that the ripper creates will have trouble free .vobs. :)

Thanks everyone. The DVD import worked great! I always seem to forget that because just copying and renaming the VOB file so often works for me. Thanks again :)
