Livestream with minimal delay

This might be too bleeding edge for todays standards but would love to offer tve following to my clients:

I want to be able to push out a livestream/livecast of a dinner event so that the live audience can view the speakers on their phone instead of watching on overflow screens. Think of the game “HQ” where everyone is watching it and everything is synced. Of course this would require minimal delay.

If there is a platform that supports this, i would want to also be able to push out pre-recorded dinner videos at key moments during the program as well. Maybe even having everything in vertical orientation. Another plus would be that people who arent there can watch a standard livestream of the event (which can be delayed)

I’m willing to have eveyone download an app ahead of time, however it has to be user friendly and needs to be available on ios and android.

Thoughts?

Possibly. If you had an RTMP server on the local WiFi, you could get the delay down to a second or so. The clients would never have to leave the LAN to grab the stream, so you latency would be minimized. I foresee a lot of web programming in your future.

I think you can do better/shorter than a second with a local server, but a lot will depend on the encoder too and how fast the client connection really is so that a large amount of data can be pushed as soon as they connect to the server. I would look into a Wowza server on site and directly connected to the internal network, this is probably the cheapest reliable server to use for this. For other options, you'll need to hit google and see what other companies offer, their may be better products for this, but I bet they cost more as well. https://www.wowza.com/docs/how-to-s...-in-wowza-streaming-engine-for-rtmp-streaming

As far as encoders go, I'd see what an AJA HELO will provide, there may also be something from Teranex that might work too. The Matrox Monarch will not give less than 1 second, even if you connect to the Monarch itself. At least with our older unit it won't, and with the way support handled our issues back when we bought it a few years ago, I can not in good faith recommend their product as a solution! We use this to stream only, because the record always loses sync between audio and video. I want to step up to a HELO, but money has been tight.

There may be some other IPTV products out there that you should look at, they may be faster, haven't messed with too many.

Not sure Youtube is the solution, but worth a try, my luck has not been good with this feature (could be my garbage encoder). Any system that supports direct connections can also be extended by Wowza, but if you are going to involve a streaming server, might as well just use the server.

The only other way around this would be a multicast stream, and then the network switches would need to be configured for this feature. In short the network switches take on all the distribution for a single stream source. Each additional connection picks up the stream in progress and any bad packets just get dropped (vs. resent). This might let the Teradeck do the job, maybe. Would need to talk to BMD about this feature and see if they can send a multicast stream, and then see if your network can keep that stream alive.

There is no quick and dirty way of getting this done without a pile of testing, short delay streams are no the norm so testing and more testing will be required.

OBS Studio on a laptop? I'm sure you can set custom delays, it will be fiddly though, that is the price of open source software.
