Live FCP Feed on Set? Possible?

What would I need to have a live feed from my camera into Final Cut Pro or Color?

I would like to specifically adjust my lights to work nicely with my filters in post & vice versa.

Anyone done this?
Anyone done this guerilla style?

I'm not sure that you can apply filters to a live feed that simply...but maybe?

I would rather not be capturing, just being able to apply the filters to a live feed.

Also be aware that what you'll see on an FCP screen will be far from accurate color-wise, and especially luminance-wise (they tend to be murky even at full brightness) unless you use an external calibrated monitor solution like a Matrox MXO.

I've got a color accurate monitor. So I could have that feed from FCP to MONITOR

It's the connection (both hardware & software) from CAMERA to FCP that remains in question....

You need to specify your camera, but I can tell you that if it's an HVX 200 you just need a firewire cable. The HVX also can't be set to 720/24pn. 720/24pa is what you'd need for that rate.

From my best understanding you could not apply live filters within FCP in the sense that you are describing. The software just wasn't intended to work that way. Now somebody could write an app that would allow something like this to take place but I don't see it happening inside FCP with FCP filters. You would be looking at some sort of broadcast production hardware/software to do that or a realtime FX video card with predetermined FX limitations.

I remember when real-time specialized capture/render cards were more common you could do certain FX functions that the card was pre-programmed to do "live". However, most of our hardware has gotten away from this FX specialization and there really doesn't seem to be much reason to build that "live" pass-through functionality into software specifically designed for editing.

You could just do some quick captures and apply the FX... Doesn't seem like a big deal.

Addressing your initial question just plug whatever cable will interface your camera with your specific editing hardware and "capture now" in FCP of course with the proper settings for whatever you are feeding in. If you let us know what you have for hardware / camera my answer wouldn't have to be so vague.
